2wd locked in my truck is a disaster in slick wet conditions. 4wd open is way better. It's a quick easy solution to lock the rear in dry conditions though.

I don't think the Focus woes are a fair example of the Ranger. DCA's are very expensive. Adapting one to an economy car was a fools errand from the start. Possible, but way too ambitious.

Displacement, rpm, minor changes aren't going to do jack to fuel economy. A gallon of gas is only going to move a SD 17 miles at 65 mph no matter what. No free lunch for 7000# of steel.

Our 8.1l was weaker than a lil Ford 5.4l. Same reason chassis cab trucks get de-rated and massive torque limiters. It's painful watching 5'er towers avoid chassis cabs because of the de-rate, and big gears due to ignorance, only to see them later puking coolant on the side of a hill.

There's plenty of truth to that. A custom built right hand drive American one ton truck is about as pricey as a nicer Porsche. I bet they'd be wheeling tons of them If they could.
