Very nice. I'm with you for just leveling out the rear and staying with the stock look. No mods necessary, just keep it well maintained. Not a fan of the front bumper, but it looks to mean business.:)
I don't think the truck in the photo is lifted. The truck you're getting is really mint, so keep in mind that you may be lowering the future value by lifting it. After all, that's a big deviation from original... Shouldn't matter if you plan on keeping it forever though.
Me too. I've had two 22RE's and 1 3.0 V6. All of them blew head gaskets. 3.0 before I bought it (now 11 years later and doing just fine), my old '85 4Runner 22RE blew 9 years after I sold it, current 22RE came with blown gasket when I bought it.
That said, I would take the 22RE/5 spd combo...
I didn't see a price for it. On the truck you're looking to buy, it doesn't look lifted to me. 31 looks a bit better on these trucks, but not enough to warrant replacing new 235's, IMO.
Given your stated driving plans, I see no need for a solid axle. I wouldn't do it, especially since you are in California and would have to pass smog laws with an old technology engine.
Maybe impossible? :) But if the frame isn't rusted out it could still be worth some effort. Who cares if the body isn't rust free anyway. You could get manyl years of good service out of the truck. Just don't dump a bunch of money into unnecessary "upgrades".
The wombat is a cutie. They must be pretty slow to be victimized by cars, or maybe they typical driver there is a speeding fool like here in the US. How is a wombat as a pet?
^ Right you are abut the X-Tra cab. The weight of the '86 seems low, doesn't it? Also, MPG seems a bit low, compared to my '92 with the same engine and 200,000 miles on it.
Rubicon and Runner may be overkill for your needs. With the big dogs, I would stick with keeping them in the back of a pickup. You could downsize into a mini Toyota 4x4 for slight MPG gain. 2wd would really give you a MPG gain and would be easy to load, but that's probably not what you're...
Looks taller than just an OME lift. Stock gearing?
Martinjmpr gives great advice. I think your idea of $6K is reasonable, though I would be one of the guys falling out of the potential buyer pool due to the mods.
I have a '92 with the 4. They have little power in stock form, never mind lifted and weighed down with accessories. Sure, it can make it up the passes, just not haulin' ******** at the speed limit. Doesn't bother me a bit, but give it a test drive and see what you think. If you buy it, maybe...
