I had a rough time deciding between the 4th generation and my JK, if the 5th gen had been out I think it would have been an easy decision. Now I have to sit here repeating, "I am committed to my JK" over and over again.
I highly suggest Keens, they are the only shoes that last long enough for my 7 year to outgrow them. I've had decent results with hi tecs and dismal experiences with childrens Merrils.

I don't think it really weakened the rim, but I am far from an expert in that area. I had it done at a professional wheel shop in Denver and the owner said the only drawback is that I no longer had a hub centric wheel if I ever needed to use it on my Jeep.
I had the same problem and instead of using spacers I took my wheels to a machine shop and had great results. I had three wheels lathed out so I would have a spare tire as well.
Good news, I would like to put these on my JK but I fear they wouldn't be worth much in snow. Unfortunately a guy from Baton Rouge isn't likely to be able to answer that question...
Look for some JK Rubicon take off's, they are BFG MT 255/75 17. As a matter of fact I have a few in my garage that you could take off my hands pretty reasonably.
