I tried to post the previous as a table, but it didn't align properly.
Sorry for the long, long message.

Personally, I'd go for the Toyota. The 4.0L is reliable as can be and has a timing chain that will last well over 100k miles. The transmissions seem to be bulletproof and the mods to the 4runners (ARB, etc) make them really stand out. Either way, you are getting a great vehicle. Just my 2 pennies.

I think it is a reasonable comparison, and if I were purchasing today those two would absolutely be the finalists.

If we had some more info as to what you plan on doing with it, we may be able to help more. For example, if you are crawling over rough stuff all the time, go with the Jeep. If you want a more highway friendly vehicle that has some cool stuff to help you down the trail, go with the Yota.

Apples vs. Oranges. Just figure out whether you want an apple or an orange, and go from there.

I did this exact comparison. Rulled out the Jeep now it's between the 4runner or tacoma. I'm leaning toward the tacoma

I think it is a fair comparison. I see those two vehicles as the best of what is new in the NA overland market (as far as wagons go).

We are setting up a test soon. Test 2010 trucks are starting to get assigned.

If anything I would think the Xterra would be a better comparison vehicle.

It's a better comparison at a lower price point. I think the Xterra is the ideal bargain SUV. What a great pkg. Worthy choice for offroading.

Naturally, it falls to the FJC as competition but I always saw the Xterra as a bargain 4Runner.

The Unlimited Rubicon is just in it's own category. Nothing else has the ability to run fully open-no doors and in a spartan, offroad setup with solid axles and a tremendous aftermarket. The vast majority that buy a RU are not cross-shopping. JMO.

The natural competitor from Toyota is the FJC. That is the closest thing Toyota makes to fulfill this market.

I just don't see them [4R and RU] as competitors, they are so different.
4R is a premium, offroad suv. A "baby" Land Cruiser.

I guess the only real commonality is the price range but the Trail Grade 4Runner starts around $37K while, I think, a nicely equipped Rubicon Unlimited is around $34K

i fail to see how the Xterra is not worthy competition to the '10 4Runner, or how the FJC is superior to the Xterra. with the Off Road package (rear locker), an Xterra can be had for $27k. the Xterra OR and FJC have comparable approach/breakover/departure angles and similar wheelbase, rear locker, so wherein is the shortcoming?

moreover, i do see the '10 4Runner as a realistic competitor to the Rubicon Unlimited, if only because of the price. to get into a Grand Cherokee, you're spending over $40k to get the diesel and Quadra-Drive II.
