Normally its the matrix that is bad. I've seen good test results and still had a bad matrix. You can get better ones than the factory from Exmoor.

I built a set out of some Unimog axles. Plenty of them out there and parts are readily available.

You're gonna need just a bit more fluid to do the transmission...maybe 1/2 a qt more.

Old imports are the way to go. People who are concerned about parts being hard to find or finding someone to work on it are most likely too lazy to keep one in good shape even if they had all the $$$ in the world. Don't be discouraged...it's all part of the adventure.
