Hydronic Heat, Hot water, and Engine Pre-heating

Heat transfer is not instant so "on demand" is not an option. For hot water you need to heat a hot water tank.

Soft Shackles - what is your experience?

I use nylon braided static rope exclusively. Learn how to tie knots. Cut the rope if necessary. I have pulled out vehicles up to 26 tonnes with just 1" nylon braid. Nylon absorbs shock loads and does minimal damage when it fails.

    Lowly the Lorry. . .

Time to stop and talk to an engineer. you need to lengthen the wheelbase or shorten the habitat. Keep going like that and you are headed for trouble.

MB 917 Center and Rear Diff locks.

Full time 4X4, diff locks can be engaged while rolling with no load, walking pace with no throttle, engaging the clutch would help. The truck is full time 4X4 with open diffs. When you lock the diff you split the power 50/50. Engage the center diff on snow covered roads, it becomes a different...

    Opinion on Rust?

Not an issue. In Ottawa cars rust out before they age out. That looks like a 1 year old frame to me! Oil spray it to stop the rust and you're done.

Sometimes even a solid platform isn't enough - BBC article about a family traveling in Australia

The skill is when it starts to bog stop. Stay on trails. Read the weather forecast, if it is not favorable wait. Getting stuck is not an emergency when you have 2 weeks of supplies on board. Going remote then relying on emergency services to get you unstuck deserves a bill for those services. A...

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

I recommended the Ford over the Sprinter as a better value. Diesel is cheaper than gas per mile, although I made no recommendation of diesel over gas. Wash? Anywhere with a hose. I need to stand in the back for work, anyone who wants to use their vehicle for long term living needs to be able to...

Importing a Mercedes Fire Truck - Exempt from Duty if you modify the truck?

I have just sold our truck, The Heffalump to a US buyer. These truck imports are always case by case. Our truck was a 1993 MB917AF chassis built as a motorhome on a brand new chassis in 1994. Imported to Canada in 2013. Imported to the US in 2021. Assessed duty 2.5% A truck or bare chassis will...

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

The problem with the GM Savanah is you can't stand up in it and it has horrendous fuel economy. My daily driver is a 2019 2wd 144" diesel Sprinter and has been trouble free. I still think the Transit AWD is a better deal.

    Ford Dodge or Mercedes van

Ford Transit high roof AWD is probably the best value of the three.

    AGM vs Lithium??

The Silicate salt battery looks very promising. https://shopsolarkits.com/products/genezen-100ah-advanced-silicate-salt-battery-deep-cycle-solar-battery?variant=34361364512908

    AGM vs Lithium??

First the two batteries you link are not remotely comparable, that Battleborn has 3X the effective capacity of the Renogy. I would also argue that AGM's are not worth it compared to flooded lead acid. How many Ahrs do you need? If it is 200Ahr you need a 400Ahr lead battery. How important is...

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

I understand where you're going with this. The point is disconnect the automatic battery heat, it is not needed. Control it manually for the rare "cold start" situation .

Heated Lithium / LifePo4 House batteries in Northern (cold) climates

There should be no need for battery heat if the batteries are in the heated envelope of the camper. If the camper is in use the batteries will be warm enough to accept charge. If the camper is stored and unheated there should be no need to recharge the batteries. Cut off the automatic battery...

    Things in the Tank

You only disconnect the axle that will be rotating. Disconnect at the diff end. It mat be easier to disconnect both ends instead of trying to support a half disconnected shaft.

    Things in the Tank

Details are in the owners manual. There is a speed and distance limit for towing to protect the drivetrain, I cannot recall the details but beyond that you need to disconnect the driveshaft or get it on a low boy. How far was the tow?
