Any 4 persons Sprinter 170" floorplan / layout with fixed seats?

Short wheelbase, no toilet/shower, no kitchen, basically two blowup beds. Not what the op is looking for.

Those automatic chains might be fine for road use but will be no help in mud or deep snow. They just spin chain under the wheel to aid traction.

The Heffalump has an ISRI air seat. A small plastic component failed after the first year we has the truck, the seat was probably about 18 years old. I capped off the air supply and quite honestly preferred the ride without the air seat operating.

Another issue they had was ice on the ledge in winter weather stopping the roof from closing properly. Also with the roof down all the windows are covered so keeping the roof down in high winds is not great.

We traveled for a couple of months with friends with a GXV lifting roof. It was not uncommon to hear them start up in the middle of the night to move the truck because a wind shift was shaking the truck. It made for a wonderful interior but it was a PITA.

I have never heard of anything more than 240 hp for the OM366LA from the factory. Does not mean it does not exist but 240 hp is plenty, then again,we lived happily with 170hp.

Visco Fans and falling off parts...

The Heffalump has gone to the West coast USA. We are buried in work on our new property for the next couple of years, then possibly a Europe adventure by canal. In the mean time we have plenty of room for overlanders, near Smiths Falls, Ontario.

Visco Fans and falling off parts...

The big nut is to lock the fan in the event of overheating due to the fan clutch not working, this is the normal failure mode. You can't carry spare everything Jon. The viscous fan is a heavy part. Our fan (actually somebody else's fan as we just sold the Heffalump) comes on on climbs and city...

Visco Fans and falling off parts...

Being in tune with your truck's noises is key to catching problems early. We were driving out from Wrangle st Elias following a friend in his MAN. We were clipping along at a good pace and at one point I heard a pretty good clunk from below. Sounded like a good sized rock in the wheel well. we...

    Charging Both Ways

Jon, what engine is that? The OM366 should not need bleeding, pump the manual lift pump(right beside the fuel filter) till it gets hard and it should start very quickly. The injectors are not easy to access. As for the 24 V battery issue, we carry a 230V 24V battery charger, hook it up to the...

    pivoting frames and mounting campers

Ask White Acorn what they think of using LORD mounts : https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/is-this-a-unimog-failure-or-a-gxv-failure-pic-included.110780/ Before you start engineering a mounting system not approved by the chassis manufacturer you better be pretty sure of your abilities.

    Installation for Hydronic heater

This diagram is for adding to a truck for pre heat, the typical install. It does not take a habitat loop into consideration. Do not place the heater in this position. The diagram below shows heater location for a camper box.

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

This is the difference between the weekend warrior and full timer. Hydronic takes a long time to heat up but once it is up to temperature it is a very even heat. Heating water by blowing hot air on a jug? I think that might be a little too simple, #vanlife perhaps! There seems to be a constant...

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

A good point on the calorifier, we have a 20 liter (Isotherm Spa). It delivers much more than 20 liters of hot water though. The water in the tank can get up to close to engine coolant temps 80C, far too hot to use. A thermostatic mixing valve drops the hot water to a safe temp and increases the...

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

Sure bits of scale get into the coolant over time, these heaters are engine coolant heaters . They are designed for pre heating diesel engines, using them to heat our habitats is a small part of their market. I do understand trying to keep everything pristine. Our highest radiator in the shower...

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

I hope you are not using 25 year old coolant! The fact is these systems are designed for engine coolant. We have two radiators higher than the engine expansion tank,28 years of use, it is not an issue.

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

Having a diesel heater for the engine and a Truma combi in the back is more complicated and more expensive. This is our setup. 28 years of operation does everything you want. Engineered and installed by Webasto Italy. The habitat loop is tied into the engine coolant with the Webasto tied in...

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

First "fairly large". Bigger is not better in heating. A unit that is too big will cycle too often. You will get many differing opinions here, this is what I have got out of 8 years living with a truck with a 28 year old Webasto system. The original Thermotop C was replaced 6 years ago. Our...

    Water purification, LED UV, specifics....

You should take another look at your filter choices, do a little more research. A100 micron pre filter is basically an old sock. I suggest 5 micron pre filter, 0.5 micron carbon block.
