The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi Everyone, Zambia is off to a stunning start. I have been playing with Chimpanzees again, hiking into beautiful waterfalls, exploring wilderness areas and ancient caves, and I even managed to run the Jeep out of gas! FAIL! To read those stories, checkout these two pages...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

The KO2s have been nothing short of brilliant in every way. I actually just put a video on youtube about patching only the second puncture I have had on the whole trip. The choice between KO2s and KM3s is probably more about how far off the beaten path you want to get. If you want to get...

    Pronghorn rear bumper is here!!!!!

Cool. It would be great to see actual photos of it on a vehicle, and also the actual weight for each different config. It sounds like they'll adapt this to the JL pretty soon, so it should be a big seller if it's lighter than the competition. -Dan

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi All, After a total of 38,668 miles I have driven into African country number 25 - Zambia! I'm really looking forward to this one, and finally I feel like progress is being made on this "to the North" segment of the expedition. The map on the hood is getting filled in by the day! You...

I can't wait to see what the diesel JL does! I suspect it means there will never be a need to carry a jerry can at all! -Dan

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi All, Zimbabwe is continuing to blow my mind. Every day provides something new - it's always stunning, and there is never anyone around. In the south I checked out the region near Matopos National Park which has a lot of beautiful places and great remote places to explore. We found an...

Barn Door for JK factory hardtops

This is the standard export JK that basically every country outside North America gets. I've seen hundreds in South America, Southern and Eastern Africa, Australia, Europe. The 2.8 diesel is cool, though people don't like the lack of power, and in fact in South Africa & Australia people avoid...

    Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

This is great, thanks very much! It looks like if you had a vertical "wall" section on the right here, it will drop straight down and even the spare tire would be within the enclosed space. Perfect! -Dan

Thanks, that looks awesome. I have a question that I can't quite answer from your photos - I'm interested in how much of the tailgate is "covered" by the BatWing when it's open.. i.e. if you had a tailgate table for cooking, is it entirely covered by the BatWing, or does the BatWing end kind of...

    Weight management

I'm in a JK Wrangler, so I kind of have no choice on option A, and I try as hard as I can to keep option B in mind. Living out of a vehicle is about compromise, and it's always worth remembering when choosing equipment, and what to bring and what not to bring. It's great to have light...

Jeep truck and FWC or Khaya Camper

Which has to be wrong. Why the difference here JT Scrambler Pickup Base (3.0L Diesel): 5100 lbs | 6500 lbs | 1400 lbs JT Scrambler Pickup Premium (3.0L Diesel): 5200 lbs | 6500 lbs | 1100 lbs The premium only weighs 100lbs more, but it's payload is 300lbs less? And with the 3.6 the premium...

Jeep truck and FWC or Khaya Camper

I feel certain tons of vendors are thinking about it - Adventure Trailers, Go Fast Campers etc. but as you said, it will depend entirely on the dimensions of the bed, and I don't think there have been official specs yet (though whole knows if vendors have them already..) It will obviously be a...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi All, After a great time on the beach in Mozambique, I have driven into African country number 24, Zimbabwe. The Immigration guy in Mozambique didn't want to let me leave, though after a few hours of patience he finally let me go. As beautiful as it was, I don't really want to get stuck...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

I think the 3.5 and 4.5 came first because they are the "complete" system with the hi-steer setup. It's a very comprehensive lift that takes a LOT into consideration for good handling. The 2.5 came later and is less comprehensive. I feel the same way, I prefer a lower lift, but in the end I'm...
