The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi All, I crossed into South Africa no problems at all, and after a quick jaunt I have crossed into the Kingdom of Lesotho! (Don't worry, I'll go back to South Africa for a lot more exploring!) Lesotho is amazing, here we are enjoying the views of one of the biggest single-drop waterfalls in...

    Jeep's Rollover Protection

Cheers! I wrote quite a bit about how I finance these trips. It's really just a matter of priorities. http://theroadchoseme.com/work-less-to-live-your-dreams -Dan

    Jeep's Rollover Protection

That's exactly what I did, tons of pictures and the full explanation in the following two links (Yes, I know the corners of the roll bar are not super strong. It's fine. I have done 30,000 miles through West Africa with it and wouldn't change a thing)...

Solar panels, fixed to the roof, adjustable on the roof, or portable?

Do you mean 200W of solar is more than I need? If that's what you're saying I disagree. As long as I can get a couple of hours of full sun, the panels can keep up with the fridge easily. If I park in shade and/or aggressively charge the two big laptops on board, then the panels absolutely...

Solar panels, fixed to the roof, adjustable on the roof, or portable?

I disagree. What I'm saying is that by 8am my solar can replenish what was used overnight by the fridge. And yes, I often sit still for many days without starting the engine, so obviously I do need solar. -Dan

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi All, Some of you must be wondering what it would be like to ride along with me in the Jeep for 10 days, or even do what I'm doing full time. The Editor of JPFreek Adventure Magazine flew out to Africa and did exactly that, and you can read all of his thoughts on what I'm doing with my life...

Solar panels, fixed to the roof, adjustable on the roof, or portable?

No question, keep it simple and have them mounted to the roof, always connected. I have 200 watts hard mounted on the roof of mine, and at this point I basically forget they are there. If I camp with the roof facing East the battery is full before I'm finished my coffee at 8am. I recently...

    Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

approx. 200lbs sounds find to me. Lower yourself down a bit with your arms and transition onto it. I do that now all the way down to the tire and it would be *really* nice to have a step in between that does not tempt me to step on the plastic guard flare. -Dan

    Ursa Minor Pop-Top Jeep JK

I'm not sure if J30 owners have seen it - AEV finally released their "side rails" that go on their rear corner guards. This will make getting up and into the J30 from the sides about a thousand times easier. https://secure.aev-conversions.com/shop/corner-guard-rail-kit-for-jk-wrangler If I...

    Damon's White JLU Rubicon

Woah, that thing looks mint! What kind of mileage are you getting? If you don't mind, can you please take a couple of photos of the undercarriage? I'm especially interested in what it looks like between the exhaust and the rear driveshaft (where the evap canister is on the JK) and also of the...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi All, I'm a bit behind editing the thousands of hours of HD footage I have filmed on the West Coast. My latest YouTube video just went up, it's about my time exploring Gabon - possibly my favorite country on the West Coast. I can't believe more people don't explore there! I vow to get one...

On board water systems questions. Specifically check valves and venting.

I forgot to mention the other benefit of a simple breather hose. Mine is long enough I can just feed it out the door when I'm filling the tank - so I fill the tank until it overflows out the breather, that way I know it's full to the brim! You can see it overflowing here: -Dan

On board water systems questions. Specifically check valves and venting.

I have a 12V Shurflow pump that pulls the water out of the tank, through the filter and UV lamp and then out a tap in the back with all the pressure I could ever need. -Dan

On board water systems questions. Specifically check valves and venting.

I designed and built a water tank / pump / filtration setup on my Jeep that has been working fantastically for over a year through West Africa. For venting I just have a hose that runs a couple of feet higher than the tank sits. It's always open to the air. Only once on the entire trip has...

Ursa Minor style top for a TJ?

This photo shows a Safari Cab with the roof unbolted and hanging above the Jeep: How long is the roof on the Gr8Tops Sarari cab? ...I'm wondering if it's long enough for sleeping. -Dan
