    The Camo Jeep Expedition Build

I have the KO2s in 34x10.5R17 (kind of a unique size) - tall but skinny. I absolutely love them, though I do have a Rubicon 6 speed (so 4.10s). I don't know how they would go on the 321, though I am sure someone is running them. -Dan

What's The Best Gasoline Engine Compression Ratio For RTW Travel?

I strongly believe this is a myth perpetuated since the "exploration" days of the 80s. I have driven a petrol engine Jeep from Alaska to Argentina, and now down the coast of West Africa - which hundreds of people said could not be done. I have bumped into many people doing so in petrol engines...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hey All, The DRC continues to impress and continues to be a mud slog! I arrive in the extremely famous Luozi looking to cross the ferry, though not before the nastiest "warlord" Policeman of the journey has his say! Read that story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/across-the-drc-day-3-luozi...

    JK mud flaps

I have the stock Mopar ones on the front - and while they do a good job of keeping most mud off the doors, they are probably more trouble than they are worth. Every time they snag on a rock or a log they pull back on the entire (stock) fender, tearing it. I have torn one in half, and the other...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hey All, The slog across The DRC has started in earnest! After writing an entry date in my own passport with a pen, I am finally legal in the country! The walking trail got interesting in a few places, and I just about tore one of the fenders right off. Read more here...

I am assuming it's because there is simply no option to buy "trash". There are no stores for coke bottles, plastic bags, etc. The only store I have seen had only vegetables. You carry them in your hands! -Dan

Cummins 2.8L Diesel "Repower" engine kit

The NSG 370 was used by Mercedes for years behind many of their gas and diesel engines (OM 606 for example). The guys tuning those diesels say it can hold a lot of hp & torque, well over what it is rated for. -Dan

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hey Everyone, It turns out just getting to the border of the Congo to leave can be an adventure!: I wound up camping the night at the border post, for the first time in my life. Read the story here: http://theroadchoseme.com/leaving-congo-dolice-to-londela-kayes From there the road got MUCH...

Cummins 2.8L Diesel "Repower" engine kit

Dirt Every day just put this on Facebook, so it must be official All things considered, I think that's an extremely good price for a brand new 0-mile engine. Surely it comes with accessories a computer and a harness.... I can't imagine they would make you pay more for that b/c you have to...

    Possible on a 2dr?

Yep, I did the 40,000 miles in one two year trip :) I have the JKU now because I wanted to be able to sleep in/on the vehicle. For Africa I figured it was much safer than a ground tent! I also added a lot of modifications like a water tank and filtration system, fridge, solar panels, storage...

    Possible on a 2dr?

I drove my 2 door TJ from the very top of AK to the very bottom of South America - 40,000 miles over two years. It was my house. I was only one person, though I did have passengers and luggage quite a few times, and it was no problem. I removed the backseat and made a storage shelf, and there...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Hi all, I spent some time around Pointe-Noire Congo, waiting aniously for the Angola visa. Traditionally it's the hardest of all to get, with many, many people being denied in years gone by. Happily the current president feels the country is "ready for tourists" and so things are getting...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

It depends how you look at it. If you see it as extortion, then yeah, it really gets to you and you have a crappy day. On the other hand, if you look at it as people genuinely helping out and doing you a favor, then it's perfectly OK to pay for that convenience. I didn't have to run around...

Finding Premium (high octane) Gasoline in Remote Areas

It has burned everything I have thrown into it so far. I have filled up a couple of times from containers on the side of the road - often they smell like paint thinner, not gas. Also a couple were cloudy and had nasty black blobs floating around that went into a tank once or twice. All good so...

Finding Premium (high octane) Gasoline in Remote Areas

What makes you think you can't get gas? I have driven AK-Argentina, and now down the West Coast of africa, and in my entire life I have probably seen more stations with gas and not diesel rather an diesel but not gas. Scooters and Chinese motorbikes outnumber 4-wheeled vehicles 1000 to 1 (or...

The Road Chose Me: Driving a Jeep Wrangler 80,000 miles around Africa for 2 years

Honestly no way to know. Could have been weeks. Also at the regular price I would have paid about $80, so in reality I only paid $120 for the convenience. I have paid more than that for multiple visas on this coast, so it's well worth it! -Dan
