    Duty On Imported Motorhome

So an expedition truck, (completed as an expedition truck 25 years ago) that is 25 years old will be seen as a motor home. 2.5% duty. A new habitat on a 25 year old chassis will be assessed duty in 2 parts, 25% on chassis and 2.5% on the habitat. Thanks, Charlie. There must be someone on this...

What do you carry on your bumper?

You can use the front bumper too. Good spot for 600 lbs of spare tires! Uyuni, Bolivia

    8x8 Man Kat

The MAN Kat 8X8 is not a good choice as a base vehicle. There will be many places you are too big to access. As for putting a brand new camper on a 25 year old chassis and trying to call it a 25 year old motor home... forget it. It will be a "new" motor home Plan to pay the full duty as a truck...

    Duty On Imported Motorhome

I want to try to keep this thread focused on the duty. If anyone has imported an expedition truck to the USA please let us all know what was the duty paid?

    Solar power question

You can expect 36 Amp hrs on average daily charge. How many Amps does your furnace draw times the number of hours you run it plus all other draws need to be less than that, don't forget a 10% efficiency loss from the batteries.

Importing 25+ year old Unimog expedition truck/camper

Why from Australia? It will be left hand drive and more expensive to ship than from Europe.

    Man Kat 8x8

Are you sure you want the Kat 8x8? Absolutely terrible base for an overland camper, unless you plan to drive to the desert and stay there. My understanding on the vehicle type is it has to be a motorhome that is 25 years old. This is to stop avoiding import tax by changing a truck chassis (25%...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

It is a good little set up. We have a two stroke water pump with a filter and a ton of hose. After 5 years we have never needed it. Water supply has never been an issue.

    Bathing Question

We have a full shower with 750 liters of water capacity, probably not a teardrop option. One of the campgrounds in Baja had shower huts. The "shower" consisted of a bucket filled from a solar water heater and a plastic cup to pour the water over yourself. It was quite pleasant. You could heat...

    Another Chassis Conundrum????

I don't see an upside to a "ginormous" truck with a tiny camper. A ginormous truck with an 18' box with all the comforts of home, that's different.

    Parking heaters at altitude

Altitude is not an issue for the vast majority of these units. The high altitude visiting overland vehicle is a tiny percentage of the market.

    HUMAN FECES

Fair enough. It is not a good solution for popular spots.

    HUMAN FECES

If everybody did this the area around boondocking spots would look like a plowed field. On top of that the second pic is the fecal matter within 20 yards of a watercourse(seasonal). A composting toilet is about the same size, can go for 3-4 weeks for two people and leaves nothing in the wild.

    1124 AF Double Cab

Heat is easy. Diesel hydronic works great, uses your main fuel and can pre heat your engine and use the engine's waste heat. Choices are Webasto. Esparchar and Planar. Diesel cookers have mixed reviews and altitude can be an issue. Propane is nice for cooking but it adds a lot of moisture to the...

Beautiful Banff in our OEV Summit and a hydronics dilemma

We have a Webast ThermoTopC with a Mercedes 917AF chassis. The heated towel bar in our bathroom is the high point of the system. No matter how many times I fill it to the top, it always seems to settle with the top 3 inches or so with air. Once it settles at that point it no longer looses...

    Kinetic rope recovery options

we carry 150' of one inch nylon braid, double or quadruple as needed. Video is us pulling a 26 ton fully loaded bus out of a ditch in Patagonia, I had to take about a 4' start to get started. There is plenty of stretch in nylon braid (static line) to absorb shock. No shackles, knots.

    "Solar Generator"

You must be Joking. These shiny plastic boxes are ridiculously overpriced. Let's take a Jackery solar panel: $299 for a 100W panel. Any self taught self builder can put together a better system for half the price using good quality components. That self build system can be easily repaired or...
