Raise the Roof or Not... That is the question

I would not buy or live in a rig that I could not stand up in. 9'1" is nothing, we are 11'-6"!

I am concerned those water lines will freeze, although not an issue in the UAE!

    EVs with solar

Here is a map showing the average daily electricity production from 1kW of peak DC solar panels installed in each state of the United States. If we take California as an example, the map shows that on average 1 kW of DC peak capacity of solar panels produces 4.5 kWh per day or 1642 kWh per...

    EVs with solar

Nothing there to back up your 12 hrs at 70-80% Link to something that backs up your argument and quote the relevant section.

    EVs with solar

Link the studies. I have 630 Watts of flat panels. On a good sunny day around mid day I can see 70-80% of max efficiency. ONLY in the middle of the day. Morning and evening far less. Expecting 70-80% output for 12 hrs a day winter or summer is wrong. You are fooling yourself and misleading others.

    EVs with solar

You don't get charge for 12 hours! A realistic number averaging out the morning and evening with the midday peak would be 4-5 hours at peak.

600+ Unimog U1300s (all styles) ex-Mod for sale, Doncaster, UK

$42000 US and you still need to build a box, do a complete service, replace old tires, oh, you have to ship and import it too!

600+ Unimog U1300s (all styles) ex-Mod for sale, Doncaster, UK

You need to budget $10,000 for shipping and logistics. Canada 6.1% non-NAFTA tax plus HST You can expect multiple trips to MTO (Ontario) + official document translation, etc. You can do it but it is a PITA. USA 25% import tax if it is a truck, 0% if it is a fire truck, local taxes.

    Another Chassis Conundrum????

It can and is being done on bicycles, but that is a level of comfort few people are happy with. When its well below freezing and you have been hiking all day in the middle of nowhere its nice to come back to a warm truck with the cat asleep on the bed, heat up supper in the microwave, have a hot...

    Another Chassis Conundrum????

Weight adds up real fast for a full time overland truck, especially if you want to carry plenty of water and fuel. $150k US for the hard wall camper? I see a major flaw in their business model!

MB 1928 AF for an overlander

Welcome, we have a MB917AF OM366. Mercedes trucks make great overland platforms. The 1928AF will be quite stiff, you will probably have to soften the suspension, but a good base vehicle. Have you made the purchase or are you looking?

My poor man's Earth Roamer design.

Yes and that is peak output, mid day in Columbia. Not typical output. You have the solar, keep track.

On another point, I think the hallway shower is a bad idea. A shower or shower wet room does not take much space. All high end overland trucks have them. they are also a great place to hang and dry wet gear after a hike.

My poor man's Earth Roamer design.

40 amps is best case, full sun, mid day, batteries accepting full charge. Are you living with solar now?

My poor man's Earth Roamer design.

Measured with a Bogart Trimetric. I use Amp hrs The 2520 Watt hrs would be 210 Amp hrs. In perfect conditions I have seen 40Amps off the panels, but only at mid day. morning and evening those numbers drop drastically. Don't base your projected power on 12 hrs of the peak output. Are you living...

My poor man's Earth Roamer design.

Well my real world experience after 5 years on the road with 630 Watts of panels is you can expect an average of 4X the rated panels max output in Watt hours. for us that is 2520 Watt hours. Using your math and science we should be getting 70% X 12hrs X630W = 5292 Watt hours. More than double...

My poor man's Earth Roamer design.

Where are you getting your numbers? You are way over estimating your real world panel output, I would say by a factor of three. Comparing it to an Earthroamer is a bit of a stretch. The biggest feature of Earthroamers is the integrated cab-cabin. You are building a flatbed camper.
