    2018 WRANGLER

    2018 WRANGLER

It's the replacement Wrangler, the JK is 10 years old now, which seems to be about how long they keep a model. So it's YJ->TJ->JK->JL. They have announced they will continue to make and sell the JK for around a year while they are also making and selling the JL. The JK will be called the...

    Sleeping in a JKU?

I'm 6"2', and I can sleep lengthwise in the back of my JKU, as long as I move the two front seats all the way forward, and tilt them all the way forward. The bigger problem is that even after you've folded the back seat, it's not completely flat, and it makes for some very uncomfortable...

Two year circumnaviagtion of Africa in my 2007 JKUR - The Road Chose Me

Absolutely. Tires that stick out at all - virtually in any direction are illegal in many countries, and obviously first world countries are going to enforce it. You'll be put off the road in Australia by the first police that see you, and I did read a report a while back from someone who...

    2018 WRANGLER

Very, very cool. It's clear the windshield has way more lean on it, other than that.... hard to say! -Dan

Gazell, a pop-up camper for Jeep JKU

Woah, that's just for the camper? i.e. you have to provide the Jeep? USD $14,400 to $22,200 -Dan

    Jeep Eye Candy

The Trailcat was interesting to see in person. No Air conditioning, no under hood heat or sound deadening, lots of custom obviously-hand-welded pipes and connectors (heater, rad, etc.). Inside they stripped the power windows and just blanked out that part of the dash. I'm not judging, but I...

HOW-TO: DIY Drinking Water Tank, Pump and Filtration System

The diagram I made actually oversimplifies it. There are two "T" junctions with a ball valve on the two "arms" - i.e. the two inlets to the pump and the two outlets from the filter. So you have two on and two off at any given time to achieve "fill mode" or "use mode" It does mean there is a...

Gazell, a pop-up camper for Jeep JKU

Ha, I hadn't seen that. At 22 seconds in the video you can clearly see how much longer it is behind the little "slot cubby" that holds the stock jack. That's significant and must make a lot more room inside. Without the back seat it would be more than long enough to sleep in down the bottom...

Two year circumnaviagtion of Africa in my 2007 JKUR - The Road Chose Me

I'm waaaay to far into this to swap anything major now. It is what it is. I'll drive slowly and take it easy. Plus, it'll be locked away first thing tomorrow morning :) -Dan EDIT: Also worth mentioning that stubby bumpers are absolutely a no go for international overland travel. I'd be put off...

HOW-TO: DIY Drinking Water Tank, Pump and Filtration System

It's hard to skip the re filtering without having two pumps - i.e. the water coming from the tank can't go through the pump because the pump is "dirty". I did it this way because it's the simplest solution I could design. Over pressurizing the pump is no problem - it has a built in pressure cut...

HOW-TO: DIY Drinking Water Tank, Pump and Filtration System

Yeah, the design is not bullet proof because of where I route the water, running the "clean" stuff in the tank back through the dirty pump before again filtering it. So be it. For what it's worth, I plan to never fill up from water that someone hasn't already said is good to drink - this is all...

HOW-TO: DIY Drinking Water Tank, Pump and Filtration System

No worries at all for suction head with this pump. I forget what it's rated to, but it's a lot more than I need! It also has no problem being run dry and self-priming. Those clips sure look nice! I've been very budget constrained all along, so I went with what I know and could easily buy. I...

Two year circumnaviagtion of Africa in my 2007 JKUR - The Road Chose Me

The PR Team at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles filmed a short interview with me and my Jeep when I was at HQ near Detroit a few weeks back. I'm pinching myself right now, and extremely excited to be working with them. -Dan

HOW-TO: DIY Drinking Water Tank, Pump and Filtration System

Overland vehicles require a way to carry drinking water, preferably a minimum of 10 gallons, or more. Ideally, for International Overland Travel, they will also have a reliable way to filter and treat water to ensure purity and removal of bacteria when only water of questionable quality is...

Gazell, a pop-up camper for Jeep JKU

Very nice. The standing room in the back is similar to what I've done to my Ursa Minor J30, though with the stock roll bar in place their space must be extremely tight! -Dan

Think I saw the new JL...and pickup version today

I noticed that too - it's very common for a VVT V6 engine to have that, they really like equal length exhaust runners. I read somewhere it got the JK Pentaster +20hp. So if it's not a 3.6 Pentastar, it's very likely a sophisticated VVT gas engine, likely a V6. -Dan

Apocalypse Soon: We Take These Last-Of-A-Kind SUVs to the End of the World and Back

End of the world and back? I was expecting Prudhoe at least... I think their ranking makes perfect sense. The Land Cruiser costs $40,000 more than the Wrangler, almost exactly double the price. You'd want to hope it's better at some stuff :) For my money, I'll take that spare $40k and have...
