Family of 5 trying to figure things out.

I don’t have experience with those trails, but having owned a lot of 4wd/AWD trucks, as well as a couple 2wd trucks with lockers, the answer is “it depends”. With one exception, which was turning around with an empty utility trailer while cutting firewood, I’ve never been stuck in a 2wd in a...

Who ordered a New Defender ?

Looks about the same as an LR3. With traction control/lockers, lifting a wheel isn’t as big a deal as it used to be.

Back in a Rover again, mild LR3 build

A few small mods, I put a REDARC brake controller in as pulling my enclosed trailer has been taking a toll on the brakes and I imagine the front control arm bushings. I still need to put brakes on the trailer so no real feedback on how it works yet, but hooking it up wasn’t too bad. I mounted...

What would you replace your LR3/4 with ?

I can’t see going to a 10 year older car to pick up 3-4 mpg with a short commute. I drive 50+ miles per day, going from $65/week to $45/week just isn’t significant. Having a kid on the way is even more reason to keep the LR3 IMO. Significantly better safety, more comfort, HVAC, etc. The only 2...

Who ordered a New Defender ?

Land Rover’s electrical systems are notoriously sensitive and complex. I’d imagine any input that it recognizes shouldn’t be there will put it into some sort of “emergency shutdown/failsafe” mode. It appears that they are stepping down the 48v MHEV battery to allow it to power 12v accessories...

    Bed Rack or Ladder Rack

I’ve never understood paying for a full roof rack just to cover it all up with a RTT, when a pair of load bars would do the job just fine for less $ and weight. Here’s a universal pickup load bar setup from Front Runner, that will allow you to mount a tent or their bike/ski/etc racks. It...

Who ordered a New Defender ?

Let’s hope this is legitimate, and would explain a lot. It would be a shame if LR followed the logic of “well we offered diesels in vehicles guys don’t want, and they weren’t big sellers, so we’re not going to put a diesel in a vehicle people are lining up to buy if we offer it with one.” I can...

Life With A Supercharged RRS For an Overland Rig

GAP IID tool from them, there is no other equivalent substitute. I ordered one through Lucky 8 on Amazon because it came with a blank key, but it was defective out of the box. GAP took care of me but I had to pay return shipping to Canada and do a customs declaration, so I’d just buy from them...

    Bug out challenge

Yeah, it’s not exactly a fine line between the folks that can’t change a spare tire and are SOL if their credit card is declined, and the ones that are prepared to live underground in a bunker eating MRE’s and drinking recycled urine for the next 25 years. It’s wise to be prepared for forest...

Life With A Supercharged RRS For an Overland Rig

I really doubt it’s the airbags, particularly multiple ones. They generally either leak or the don’t, if it’s significant you’ll hear it hissing air. It’s likely a ride height sensor, which is a cheap and easy fix. GAP tool will tell you for sure, just bite the bullet.

Thinking of going from Tacoma to 4Runner

I haven’t owned either vehicle you’ve mentioned, but having owned 4 trucks and 5 SUV’s, I much prefer the SUV’s. I did use the truck beds, I pulled gooseneck trailers, work construction, hunt, own motorcycles, etc. In the majority of cases, I found the SUV’s better for protecting things like...

    Last 2500 Suburban

Nice build. I strongly considered one of these trucks for the towing ability, there aren’t many down here in the southeast though. Off road ride quality was a big concern also, I’d thought a coilover conversion would be ideal, but couldn’t find anything at the time. I stumbled across this kit...

Life With A Supercharged RRS For an Overland Rig

There’s is a free app called “image size” that’s simple to use, it does have to be done one at a time though. Let me know if you make it over to the panhandle at some point, we have been running the Apalachicola national forest about every other week. That’s about to slow down a bit with our...

    Critique my auxiliary wiring plan...

Thanks for the replies. I don’t need 80 amps in the cab, but I’m using one large fuse on the battery terminal to protect the wiring to my ARB compressor, Hella lights, interior fuse block, and the trailer wiring. All of them have individual appropriately rated fuses, this is just to protect the...

Who ordered a New Defender ?

I’ve been thinking the same thing about the GAP tool for the new Defender. The car seems to be attracting interest from non-Rover guys, so many aren’t aware of its capabilities. Most of the electrical issues people are worried about aren’t significant with that tool. Obviously it will take...

    Critique my auxiliary wiring plan...

Hi all, I’m working on adding auxiliary wiring/power circuits to my LR3. At this point, I don’t want a dual battery system, so I’m planning on running a portable battery box with a deep cycle marine battery when needed. Here’s the basic plan, hopefully it’s legible. I have an 80 amp fuse on...

Life With A Supercharged RRS For an Overland Rig

Glad you got it in the dirt. The grass/gravel/snow (2nd position) of the terrain response significantly tames the throttle response on my LR3. The others may vary it as well, but it’s the most noticeable. Also, IIRC, all settings besides rock crawl start the transmission out in second gear...

Who ordered a New Defender ?

With bullbars, I’d prefer them to come with the “airbag compatible tested brackets”, as well as a pair of reinforcing plates “for off-road/competition use only,” and allow the buyer to decide how to mount it. Even a 1/4” steel plate will bend if you hit a tree or car at 35 mph.

An introduction to my new LR3

Yeah, I wish there were a chart with actual measurements for these common tires, I wasn’t able to find anything when I searched. BFG’s have typically run significantly smaller than the stated size, so when you hear things like “275/65r18’s won’t allow you to move on the bumpstops,” it might not...

An introduction to my new LR3

Congrats on finding a low mile LR3. Around here, they are all 130k+, which means at least they haven’t spent half their life sitting in the shop! 265/65r18 KO2’s will clear with zero mods, and no rubbing when sitting on the bumpstops. The spare will not fit inflated, I had to completely empty...
