Looking for thoughts on truck for hauling camper

I have a 1000W Honda generator; quite, sips gas. Easily runs a 35A battery charger. Solar takes care of the absorption phase, even in heavy overcast/rain. IMO, I'd use the golf carts until they are not longer useful then decide, unless you need to drop a lot of weight. Lithium is good unless...

    Let's talk frying pans

I cut the handle off of one of my cast iron skillets and use a pot grabber or channel-lock pliers.

Are DIY tire repair kits ok for permanent repairs on small punctures?

Been there, done that (left a tire plug as only repair in for rest of the tire life).

Canada's Backroad Mapbooks Expands into the US

I prefer paper maps. This time of year (the frozen months) I have Delorme, Benchmark, NF and State maps spread out. This leaves my computer free for Google Earth, Freecampsites, park and forest web sites, etc. It would be disorienting to keep switching back and forth on screen. I have very...

    Let's talk frying pans

    Griswold (and I think other old cast iron skillets) used a number designator. A #5 Griswold skillet would be 8" top diameter, 6 3/4" bottom diameter, and 1 3/4 depth. A #6 would be: 9 1/8", 7 1/2", 1 7/8". jim

At the EPA rated 3 miles per KW rating for the Tesla Model 3, a 100W panel will give you 1.5 miles per full sun day.

EPA Diesel Engine “Delete Tuning” Crackdown...Is It Here Now?

There is some of that, but there is also other players in the decision making besides engineers who have veto power: lawyers, bean counters, reliability statisticians, sales, marketing, et.al. In any competition it is always good to have something in reserve for when it makes a difference.

EPA Diesel Engine “Delete Tuning” Crackdown...Is It Here Now?

Yep. It is done a lot. Cummins into old iron; keeping the (then) Cummins emission controls keeps it legal. I know of at least 8 Cummins 4BT and four Ram 6 cylinder diesels into original ('46 - 73) Dodge Power Wagons, perfectly legal in most of US.

    Bug out challenge

I have stayed out 18 days. The limiter for me is water; if I'm careful I can live on a gallon a day. If I can find a water supply I will need to restock in about a month. Although the last two weeks will not be enjoyable eating. jim

What do you think about this non-street legal “Jeep” clone?

Questions: How much latitude does a state have in licensing a vehicle for highway use that does not me federal emissions or safety standards? Can such a vehicle be driven across state lines legally?

    Tips for Truck Camper

I have an (old) FWC Grandby shell with DIY buildout. With 180# me, a 30# beagle, camping gear, 2 weeks supplies and 12 gallons of water, the camper weighs (CAT Scale) 1560#. 7920# (loaded truck and camper) - 6360# (empty truck, me, dog, 32 gal gas) = 1560#

6 Family EMP Proof 36-38' Expedition Rig

I have a question for those smarter than me: would a lightning strike be a good first order approximation of what damage an EMP would do to a vehicle? I have run across a number of documented lighting strikes on vehicles and the damage seems to be all over the map. One vehicle will only get...

How do you mount your popup camper to your truck?

It depends on what you call easy. Bolts are in the four corners of the camper. Tops are easy to get to. But someone (me) has to crawl under the truck to loosen the bolts; at 70 that is getting harder every year (actually its the getting up off the ground that is getting harder).

How do you mount your popup camper to your truck?

My FWC Grandby is bolted through the floor directly to the bed of my truck. 4 grade 8 bolts, 8 very large, thick washers, 8 nuts. Has worked well for 5 years.

    Interesting heating option for RTT.

Irregardless of its technical feasibility, I don't think I would want a red hot firebox with a flamethrower above it suspended over me while I sleep.

why are rooftop tents so expensive?

A RTT is a luxury item, it is not a necessity for living. All this discussion about cost of doing business is interesting and informative but irrelevant. A seller decides what price he is willing to sell for. The buyer can pay the asking price, try to negotiate a lower price, find another...
