Sleeping in my Xterra in bear country. Where should I keep my food?

They'll eventually figure it out. How long did it take bears to figure out a hanging food pack? And some of the early beards proof canisters were taken off the market because bears learned how to open them. Next time I see Yogi I'll suggest pole vaulting ?

Sleeping in my Xterra in bear country. Where should I keep my food?

First some perspective: The US has averaged 2 deaths and 20 emergency room visits a year over the last 20+ years due to bear attacks. In the same time period the US has averaged 70 deaths and 750,000 ER visits a year due to dog attacks. Bear attacks aren't that common. A bigger problem is bears...

    Old Junk vs. New Junk?

My 2¢ I've had four trucks in my life (plus the Power Wagon) and I got rid of them because I was tired of fixing them. Sounds like you're at that point now. I prefer 1 -3 year old models with low milage and spend a long time looking for the right deal (6 months or more). You crunch the...

Best place to buy a fridge?

Air masses move very slowly; you get more air exchange from the turbulence created by opening and closing the door in either a front or top loader. Plus, air has a very low heat capacity, i.e. it takes very little energy to change its temperature. After my first couple of trips I figured out...

    Increasing Power Wagon payload

Getting correct information about insurance coverages off of an internet forum is a fools game. If you have concerns, question your insurance agent. All insurance policies have exclusions that list what the policy doesn't cover, it is up to you to understand if/how they apply to being over...

Sewing Thread....A discussion on making your own adventure textile gear.

My first sewing project was a Frostline (remember them) sleeping bag kit, made with a hand-me-down Elna Supermatic. That was the mid '70 when I was a poor student. I have since made a lot of backpacking gear. Nowadays it is just used for clothing and gear repair. The Elna is still humming...

    Increasing Power Wagon payload

GVWR, GVAR, GCWR are legal figures of merit. If you are in an accident with injuries or fatalities you don't get bonus points for by adding springs, tires with higher load ratings, et. al. The court will go by the number on the door pillar. You can be found liable for doing things that reduce...

Making a cup of coffee stormy mornings

I've made many hot meals (reconstituted freeze dried swill) inside a Bibler I-tent during raging mountain storms. You practice and get your technique down before trying it in a storm. A jet-boil would probably be the easiest to use, but their are a lot of other options out there. Buying or...

Creative ways of washing roof under roof rack??? Looking for suggestions....

I'm surprised nobody has suggested a window washer's mop: https://www.amazon.com/Unger-Professional-Performance-Window-Scrubber/dp/B000VXAGWI/ref=sr_1_22?crid=302V6I1VWXCKW&keywords=window+cleaning+tools&qid=1553615822&s=gateway&sprefix=window+cleaning%2Caps%2C216&sr=8-22

Rear Winch wiring using jumper cables; what am I missing?

My 2¢: Copper wire with good quality insulation is expensive. Jumper cables will cost more than bulk wire of the same quality. There are a number of companies that sell wire in custom lengths with high quality crimped terminals if you do not have the equipment to do it yourself. Jumper cables...

Question to fridge owners - Do you leave it “running” in cold ambient temps?

I power my Norcold any time the temps are above 40ºF, but as others have said it doesn't run much (if at all). If it will stay below freezing the fridge is turned off (to save the batteries) and I put warm water bottles in to keep the stuff inside above freezing.

Looking for advise: Upgrades needed for Ram 2500 to carry truck camper?

I have a 2012 Ram 2500, 5.7 Hemi, 4X4, Standard cab, 8' box with an FWC Grandby. The truck is stock, no modifications to the suspension (will be updating shocks this summer). The truck & camper weigh out at < 8000 lbs with 2 weeks supplies. The truck sits level, and handles Forest Service...

Natures head composting toilet in colder climates

A very respectable bullpucky to your horsesit :-) If it is odorless why vent outside? I know the difference between outhouse (urine + feces) and feces smell; this was feces smell. Vented out the side of a pop-up truck camper. One was a c-head and one I don't know. Won't argue about...

Natures head composting toilet in colder climates

Anyone who has camped downwind of one will disagree. Drying ******** has an odor. That odor has to go somewhere. It is not a pleasant smell.

    Camper pass through/ window boot.

My experience is from the '80's. Had a rectangular, inflatable tube made for that purpose between truck and camper. Two things: 1. It was much noisier when the connection was open. 2. The inflatable tube wore the paint on the truck and camper. jim
