I forgot to post in this thread. Took the Tech and General on 8-22.

I have the Kenwood 281A and a Yaesu FT60R HT.
I'm trying to get an Antenna and radio for the "shack" (upstairs corner of the room).
I can't hit it from the house yet. I have to get the antenna in the attic or trees. I can hit it from the mobile while on the road in most places though.
Hey guys,
Just 2M for now. I have the Kenwood 281A and a Yaesu FT60R. I made some contacts on the mobile and then from the HT off the back deck. I'm going to have to get an Antenna in the trees or attic since I live in the worst possible spot for RF in my area. I'm on a hill, in a hole, which...
Gotcha...Does APRS come as a feature on most HF radios or is it an add on? Please forgive my ignorance, I've only been reading on this for about a month and most of it was study material for the tests.
I just saw the big ol "APRS" thread right below this one. I'll read up on it there for a bit...
Congrats Jim...I'm a recent licensee too. I have a Kenwood 281A in the truck and a FT60 HT for listening in the house. The HF options are so vast that I intend to wait till I've got more experience before driving that road. I might lean on Hilldweller for practical experience and advice....He's...
Hmmm, I'd like to see that set up too. I'm really about to get an education in radio myself. We're wiring a 911 Call center here in my area. I can't wait to see all the gadgets they bring in when we get it up and running. I'll see if I can get some pictures once it's up and running.
That's very kind of you Sir. Thanks, I might just do that.
BTW, I spent a few years crossing the Mississippi Gulf Coast Between LA and LA (Lower Alabama). I need to get back down there. It's been a while. Last time I was there was in Biloxi. We stayed at some Hotel around the strip. I don't...
Yep, every time I sit down and read something about this, it gets more and more interesting. I'm in an area that is saturated with repeaters of all bands. It's mostly 2M, but there are others. I plan to get the full 2M experience, then work into some HF once I find the right radio. So much to...
I take the test at 6:30 and if I pass I'll have to wait about 10 days to be official. Assuming I don't have a brain fart and fail the damn thing...I'll go into hiding.
I know those old guys you're talking about. I feel like I know them, their families, doctors, auto mechanics, tree trimmers...
Antenna is the first stop in most situations. Is it a mag mount? If so, it needs to be centered on the widest part of the roof or surface. If it's on an edge, you might have issues with its ground plane. Beyond that, it might be in the coax line terminations or length.
What to say when transmitting? The rules say it should be "of a personal nature or having to do with amateur radio"...something to that affect. Say what you want in those boundaries?
"When to use my call sign?" That was in the book... every 10 minutes and at the end of a transmission.
It also...
