I don't know if it is worth the hassle. You could buy a newer one or a better used one and keep that one as wall art or a tool box. Save the threaded cap as it may work on the newer cans with plastic nozzels.

I installed the MG Metalworks Hinge Extension as well. To seal around the hinge I used some thick rubber sheeting on the rear section of the door and some closed cell foam on the inside of the door. I had to cut a fair amount to get clearance for the hinge when the door was open.
A CJ-5 is really too small, too short a wheelbase (low weight capacity) to handle a camper safely on the hwy.

I brought an outdoor rv type of rug to the Expo but didn't use but it would have become a muddy mess. The plastic bin idea for your boots sounds good but I used plastic trash bags.
The secret is to try to stay dry and warm rather than trying to dry out afterward.
I had a great time and enjoyed the exhibits. Everyone I met was happy seeing the exhibitors and taking classes and meeting others. The mud was a mess and it will take a while to get it out of my rig and off my dog :) I'll go again but may camp off site in the forest.

I had to take my boots off each time I got in my truck but I couldn't get the mud off my dogs paws.
Plastic bags over you boots to protect your tent/truck might help.
