VW Bugs had batteries under the back seat for many years. Not ideal but I never heard problems with that ... just keep the positive terminal cover on to avoid shorting with the seat springs.? Often the battery acid would rust out the pan creating ventilation.
Sounds like a great plan/trip. Where does he want to go?
An LJ is a great platform and an 04 isn't too old.
Has he been working on the Jeep with you or are you doing most of it?
Spark plugs, fresh fluids and spare serpentine belt before the trip would be nice.
Do your son have an air...
Yep The spare should go on the rear door like a Land Rover or H3.
A larger or auxiliary fuel tank would be nice too.
With the extra length a pick-up model with a 6 foot bed may be possible?
It is so old there are not many listings for springs.
Rancho may have some?

I don't know if CJ-5 springs would work.
The extra length on the Africa version would be great for storage and makes room for sleeping and a potential pick up platform??
How about one with a pop top roof or Land Rover style windows?
Bring it on Jeep!!

The Wrangler Africa is the star of the Jeep concepts
Forget the Jeep Chief. If we're going off road, we're taking the Wrangler Africa. A turbo-diesel engine...
Nice Jeep!
From when the Jeep was a piece of equipment:)
Some great stuff here:

Airing down is your friend on washboard roads.
I'd look into OME as the Aussies know about washboard roads.

With the center diff locked binding can occur when turning. When binding occurs it may cause wheels to slip/skid on snow/ice. At higher speeds with good traction on flowed roads I'd run in 4Hi with the center diff un-locked. At lower speeds I'd lock center diff.
Could you find a battery operated 12 volt saw and connect it to your battery?
Has anyone tried a Lithium-Ion Battery Powered Chainsaw? Nice and quiet.
