    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

So, I've made it to another large milestone this weekend... As of 7pm last night the Hab Box is back on the truck and bolted up (hopefully for the last time!). All underside services are connected, the sideskirt rubbers are fitted and I'm happy with the result. Here's a close up of the rear...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi Alloy. I have used small metal clamps (one every 200mm) for the gas lines. Strangely, the gas fitter who's inspecting and signing off on my work has said that the rules here require a gas shut off tap to be as close to the appliance as possible, so it can be turned off quickly in an...

    Lowly the Lorry. . .

Dependant on the hole sizes and finish required, I have had very good success with Milwaukee hole saws on the drill press so long as you run them slow, keep the lubricant on them and keep the swarf clear. I've drilled through 16mm plate with mine!

    LN2 Snorkel

I had planned to keep ours which mounts to the left corner of the truck... I also planned to find one for the right (the rare ones as pictured on the first blue truck), but then bought another truck with a later front grille and side flares which looks a lot better, so I've decided not to use...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

That it does Ian. The first trip and it'll be covered in dust and scratches! :) Progress today... Wifetec helped me get the AC back off and refit the freshly painted top section of the fold out steps, then it was back under with the truck. I had calculated the height required for the truck to...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

One of the last jobs to do before refitting the Hab Box to the chassis was the Air Con. First I refitted the external AC unit so I could fix the hoses and power supply between it and the internal unit. With new flex hoses I had made this week insulated, I threaded these, a bower supply and a...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Next was to make sure that the truck fitted under the temporary frame. Even though it looks like there's loads of room the rear wheel carrier was very close. Close enough that the front wheels had to be on planks to get the rear carrier under the frame. Here are my final colour choices. The...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

The painter has visited, and a plan has been hatched. We discussed painting the body off, and then fitting it, but have decided that it should be refitted and we'll tackle the job as one. This is happening in the next 8 weeks, so this has meant I've had to get my butt into gear and finish a few...

Best Land Rover / Defender-Specific Forums?

I'm over in Australia and I use AULRO... https://www.aulro.com/afvb/ Awesome group and well run. Heaps of vehicle specific sections, and knowlegable folk on there. I used to be a regular there until I got into the world of building my own Overland Truck! :)

Feasibility of converting MB1017A from 2WD to 4WD in N. America?

Franken Truck! I used to frequent an Australian Land Rover Owner forum and thats exactly what they called my last vehicle... All I did was put a Cummins 6Bt and ZF gearbox in my 101 Forward Control Land Rover! It was one of the best touring vehicles we had too! I covered 30000+ kms in that truck...

Feasibility of converting MB1017A from 2WD to 4WD in N. America?

The good thing is you are looking into it and asking the questions before starting. When I was looking for our truck, what I wanted was very hard to find here in Australia. I wanted the later MK/SK cab, I wanted 4x4, I wanted hub reduction axles, I wanted 4.3m wheelbase and decent power etc etc...

Feasibility of converting MB1017A from 2WD to 4WD in N. America?

Hi Tony. I'd think it would be very possible... There's a few things you'd have to check against someone with a 4WD, and there's a few things you'd have to have made up. Firstly, check the front spring center to center width (center of axle locating pin to center of axle locating pin)...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Trying to remember what has to go where and if it'll all fit etc makes for some interesting thought process's of an evening! Over the weekend, I managed to fit the breather hoses for the seperation toilet. The upright pipe to the right is the feed conduit for the solar power lines. I have the...

Drag link ball joint and getting them apart

I've always had success with getting these apart using a huge bar and then a well placed hit on the side of the drop arm with a decent hammer. When I say bar, I mean something 5-6' long wedged between the ball end and something firm. With the nut loostened so theres a gap between the nut and the...

    1120 AF Build in Norway

Take the delays as a positive. It gives you the time to plan and lock in a layout that will give you all you need with no compromise... A few things I see... First up, can you make your bathroom smaller? We all spend very little time in the bathroom... Secondly, as you are limited on length, you...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Little to report here... Been pretty wet, cold and windy so motivation has been lacking. I've been doing the mundane jobs like insulating! The time consuming bits are the infills in by where the beds will be. Next job is to clad the inside of the rear lockers. Once that's done I will...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi ErnestW. You describe the 220hp V6 very well. Ours has the later OM441 and it won't win any awards for speed either. On the highway I can keep up with trafic no prob but on hills it dies away very quickly. The older NG trucks had the earlier OM421 (rounded rocker covers instead of boxy rocker...

Mercedes AL3 and HL7 available axle ratios..

Hello Cois. I have not done any more on finding higher ratios. I thought I'd get the build finished, and then once we have taken a few trips, then look to power and diff upgrades if needed. A few have said that most of the time they are only cruising around at around 90kmh so don't need...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Hi Ian. So I'm almost at the point of interior cladding. We have started insulating using 50mm Kingspan fitted in the sections between the frame and bonded to the outer aluminium skin. I've tracked back through your thread to here, to see what you did. It looks fairly similar. My question... I...
