    pivoting frames and mounting campers

I contemplated this, but then decided to utilise the Anti Roll bar from the front of our donor truck. It was sat there doing nothing, and it's job is to do exactly what I needed under the rear of our Hab box, so I went with that! Time will tellif that was the right decision! :) The small...

You can if the front axle is a normal axle with a large central diff, and the rear axle has hub reduction hubs... Prop shaft speed going into both axles will be the same, but the axle shafts in the rear axle will be turning a lot faster (lower ratio in the rear axle differential), as the final...

1958 Unimog 404 with cabover flex

It'll be interesting to see how this performs once mobile. The VW Tdi's are a great little engine.

Great find! That truck with the snorkel has the elusive RH snorkel that Neil (Cloud 9) and I are after. I have decided to loose the snorkel off the LH of our truck, so am no longer after one for the right. :)

    MB Truck vs Unimog

Hi fella. So, is the starter burnt out or is it just the solenoid pack? It might be worth pulling it off at the show and pulling it apart and see what has failed... It's got to come off anyway. Put a bolt in the heavy +ve wire with any others that are joined to it and then tape it up and cable...

MB 917AF Coming to BC, Canada

It must be an overland thing! I met my wife through Drago and we are still married too!! Yeah, Zim and Bot's are awesome. Namibia got me tho! Loved it... Oh, and sitting in Joe Cools in Durban with a cold Savanna Cider at the end of a trip!

Dedicated Heating / Hydronics / Diesel heating thread

For fear of making our system too complicated, I went the other way in the hopes of keeping it simple... I have two seperate systems. For hot water we have a Truma Aqua Go. Gas fired hot water on demand, as we have plenty of gas storage on board. For heating the Hab Box, I have gone for the...

MB 917AF Coming to BC, Canada

I was there later than you. I worked with Drago in 2000. Only got as far north as Uganda. Did everything below it, and loved it, and vow to return some day soon! I blame Drago for that thumping great project in my shed!! :) Sand matting out of a beach camp somewhere in Malawi or Mozambique...

MB 917AF Coming to BC, Canada

I think we even had similar tents with Dragoman back then too! I bought a big Swag from Zim Canvas though... Liked my own space away from the Pax! Wish I'd kept it though, and not sold it onto another incoming driver! :(

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

Great progress. I second keeping an eye on EGT's after opening the pump up. The truck drivers here live by their EGT gauges here as a lot of the road trains are pushing north of 700hp with well tuned engines. They say 600-650 deg c are the max figures they go to. Much hotter and things start to...

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Hi all. So it's been a slow few weeks. Finishing all the little jobs (the one's I'll do when I have to!!). There have been quite a few! The fuel filler hatch needed finishing properly, and the Aqua Go needed the holes drilled for the cover, and a J Gutter rain strip gluing above it...

    MB Truck vs Unimog

Hello and welcome! You have asked the question where you will get a pretty well 50/50 split in answers. Both have merit, and both have disadvantages... In my opinion I think the first thing you need to do is work out how much space you want and how much gear you plan to carry, as this may well...

It looks like it'll have the MK/SK dash as that's the later switchgear for the diff locks like ours. Our PTO (crane hydraulics) was an aftermarket fit, and had an independant switch mounted under the dashboard. The actual PTO unit was a heavy lump including a hydraulic pump. I couldnt see any...

    1120 AF Build in Norway

As Alloy said, it's little use having a fantastic departure angle if the breakover angle is limited too... Also worth considering how far 'off road' you will actually go. Our build has approx 700mm clearance under the truck in the middle. The only point lower than that is the transfer box by...

Hello. Be glad it has the straight 6 in it. The earlier OM421 V6 always sounded like someone shaking a tin can full of nuts! The later OM 441 was more refined, and capable of 340hp though. Post some pics, as we are all curious! Re your build, whatever time you think it will take, double it...

Pretty Ugly... 1835, The Build Begins

It's so true that the smallest things seem to take sooo long!! I've spent all weekend sanding, cleaning and sealing the exterior of our hab box and when I closed the workshop door last night, I felt like I had nothing to show for it! Keep going!

    Mercedes 1222A.. The beginning!

Another small job done... I was looking for some non stick surface for the steps, but could only find 6" strips. A neighbour had the idea to look at skate board shops... $40 later and I have 4 non slip pads on the steps and plenty to spare for the next time!!
