    Budget suggestions for potential IIa

My MOD crossmember looks more like a plain rectangle. Anyhow, it could very well be that the crossmember was some one-off thing, or maybe someone wanted one you could put a Hi-Lift under so they designed their own custom version. Here is what a military rear crossmember looks like:

    Budget suggestions for potential IIa

There is something goofy about the rear crossmember, so check there for rust and any repairs. They also painted the galvanized trim, which is something that really irritates me, but that is personal. Otherwise, it sounds like a great truck. If you are over 6 ft tall, or have a long torso, I...

    Series III daily driver/short trips?

My SIII was my daily driver for years when I lived in Flagstaff. The heater worked well even on 0 degree F days. The windscreen defrost was a different story, although a rag took care of that. The lack of a rear defogger and a rear wiper were annoying on snow days, but you can get both of...

    Cap or Hard tonneau?

I have a Pace-Edwards retractable tonneau, and I really like it. It gives me the convenience of an open bed or a covered one on demand, and it has held up a lot better to the Tucson sun than soft tonneaus. http://www.pace-edwards.com/jackrabbit.html

    CB antenna

This is probably answered in one of the radio books I am currently reading, but I like instant gratification at times, so here goes. How come if I put 144 MHz into the above page, I get 19.5 inches for a quarter wavelength? And if I do the math for a quarter wavelength manually, I get...

About to take the plunge - 2001 Range Rover

It came out under BMW ownership, but was mostly designed under the previous owners, British Aerospace. BMW bought it in 1994 and the RRII came out in the fall of that year. Because of BMW ownership, another name for the second generation Range Rover is "Bavarian Rover". The 3rd gen Range...

RRII has been common nomenclature for years, and I prefer it.

About to take the plunge - 2001 Range Rover

I know several folks with the RRIIs (a P38 is an airplane) who have had great luck with them. I also know others who had weird electrical problems that could never get fixed in theirs. In a RRC, if a power window motor goes out, you can replace it with a $10 generic unit from Parts Express...

Question about hydraulic systems on a series IIa

PC is pretty variable in quality, but good quality PC is very very tough. I spoke to a local sandrail manufacturer and he has need using North American Powder Coating in Tucson and been amazed at how well that PC holds up. You have to bend the suspension components into a pretzel to crack the...

Question about hydraulic systems on a series IIa

I drive a RHD, and I think it is almost a non-issue. If you need to travel on toll roads a lot, it can be a pain. At the Golden Gate Bridge, I had to unbuckle my seatbelt and slide over to pay the fare to giggling toll taker. Drive-throughs are similarly a pain, but you can just park and walk...

    EGT Gauges

Thanks - I was assuming gasoline. So if I want to avoid burning valves the EGT is more useful.

My Salisbury diff mesh pattern so far

I have been told that is the case. The issue for me was I needed the 47/10 Rover ratio, which is not an off the shelf item at the the US-based axle shops. I did order most of the bearings and shims from one of them (I think it was Randy's R&P).

My Salisbury diff mesh pattern so far

I see. Unfortunately, that did not happen, since these gears came out of a diff on the other side of the Atlantic and were given to me for the price of shipping. You can see the wear in them, but you have to really look hard with a good light, and I have so far been unable to photograph it...

My Salisbury diff mesh pattern so far

The compound is the stuff the local hot rod shop sold me. I don't know what it is, but it is not lithium grease - more like a paint. Perhaps I should dilute it with some oil. I will try to get a better picture for you - it looks better in person than in the photo. I used Billavista's write...

My Salisbury diff mesh pattern so far

This is after 2 iterations, both of which adjusted the carrier bearings. I think I need to tweak the pinion a tad.

Question about hydraulic systems on a series IIa

Oh, YOU are the one whose 101 is in a picture on his wall! He spoke very highly of you. Ernie is great. He is the one who gets my 6 cylinder with the Z-S carb through emissions every year, then tunes it up so it will actually run.
