Post your Flip pac Torsion bar failure or success

Labboy, here's a thread with my t-bar delete details plus some info from others. http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/129940-Flippac-torsion-bar-delete-modification After a year and a half, I've come to the conclusion that it works well (function and reliability) with two people but is...

    Subaru xv owner checking in

Based on my experience with a Forester 5 speed I owned for 10 years, I'd get an automatic or CVT if/when I get another Subie. For my 99% street driving I prefer a manual, and for 80% of the dirt I did it was fine (or fun) but with the tall gearing, there were places where painful clutch slip, or...

    AT Flip Pac Coming Along....

It's not clear to me if these air brake adjusters would work in both directions ... isn't their a ratchet of some kind? And other gear reduction boxes would require quite a bit of fabrication to attach given the limited space, and if using the existing FP spline attachment points, could only...

    AT Flip Pac Coming Along....

Although the lid is "heavy" when you're first opening it (i.e. close to horizontal) the assist poles I use attach to the end of the lid so you have a lot of leverage. And closing the lid isn't too hard because the descent is damped by the tent ... just keep the tailgate closed and the trapped...

5v lighting.. NiCd power, small solar panels, and LED's.. anyone else doing this?

Lots of good ideas here but not so much on 12v vs 5v. It does seem that 5v/USB output batteries are cost effective considering their compact packaging and integrated quick disconnect input and output connections (USB). They can be used for lighting, device power/charging etc. it seems this is...

    AT Flip Pac Coming Along....

Thanks @homemade, I've actually designed some gas spring lifts in my career (30 years ago) so I can figure out the forces and geometry. It's been raining like crazy here so I haven't gone out to make any measurements yet. I think the lid weighs around 100 pounds with a portion of the tent...

    AT Flip Pac Coming Along....

@homemade thanks for the diagram. I have a FlipPac with torsion bar delete and just use brute force with long poles to flip it up and then catch on the descent ... easy with two people but sketchy with one person. I'm also an engineer, not a very clever one, who's put a lot of thought into...

    AT Flip Pac Coming Along....

I used to like the "zero footprint" aspect of the FlipPac with forward flip, but it's not really an advantage in reality, since I usually have the tailgate open and stuff in that space ... cooking, seating etc. And most of the advantages listed here for a back-flip are useful. However I don't...

2000 Tundra build....or not to build

The previous poster who did the cost per mile analysis was spot on. But at least where I live, Toyota resale value is so high, and owners/sellers often don't seem to do regular maintenance and/or lie about it (I suspect), so replacing a 15 year old truck with 200K miles, with a 10 year old truck...

2000 Tundra build....or not to build

Everyone's got an opinion so I'll toss mine in. I am in a similar situation, with a T100 with 185K miles that was needing some deferred work. In many ways it feels like an old truck ... worn seats, rough ride, mediocre brakes, and no modern luxury gadgets or safety features. But the motor and...

    2017 Ridgeline

Following up on my own comment, I poked around and learned that the Pilot and new Ridgeline have a more sophisticated AWD system than the much-maligned CRV. It is nominally FWD but does transfer power to the rear as the front spins. But it also transfers power to the rear at lower speeds and...

    2017 Ridgeline

I really like the more conventional styling vs. the previous Ridgeline, and the longer bed is much more usable for my particular cargo, 29" mountain bikes. I had a Subaru for a long time and found that a good AWD system was sufficient 99% of the time, even without low range, although it was hard...

Looking for popup that would fit Tacoma

I think anyone considering a pop-up should take a look at the FlipPac. Roomier, cheaper, lighter; much less weather-proof and lower quality; needs to be outfitted by the owner; arguably more versatile.

Help me select new tires - Which have you liked or disliked?

I have no experience with modern AT or MT tires, though I think the Michelin MS2's on my current T100 are in fact excellent, ddespite looking like passenger car tires. However when I bought my locked 80 series LC back in the '90's, it came with no-name undersized all-season tires. But they...

    AT Flip Pac Coming Along....

I'm not sure if the FlipPac name is a registered trademark, but it is not an AT product. So AT's new camper shouldn't be called a FlipPac, I think. Or is AT designing it for FRP? Regardless, a quality competitor to the FRP FlipPac is a good thing

    New flip pac RAIN FLY

Not to hijack the OP's thread, but ... I asked this question a while back but don't recall an answer. Does anyone who removed the torsion bar and do a "pole flip" also have a rain fly, and is it possible to install in a similar manner as normal, and then flip the lid? Or does the pole and/or its...

    flippac waterproofing

Thanks for the tips. I cheaped out and just used foam tape from Home Depot since I can never find bulb seal locally. As for loosening the rear clamps, what's the thinking there ... does it help provide more uniform clamping pressure? My lid seals seem in good shape and not taking a "set". But my...

    flippac waterproofing

We've had about 4" of rain here in the last few days and my truck has just been sitting out on the street. I popped open my rear lift gate to load some stuff today, and it was pretty wet inside. And that's with the FlipPac closed :(

    flippac waterproofing

I wonder if SLO Sails would be interested? Or was that investigated when they did the first flies? If we could get quality aftermarket tents and torsion bars I think there'd be a lot of happy FlipPac campers! For the tent, a waterproof material, flaps hanging over the lower edges to redirect...
