what brakes are you guys using?

I have a T100 with stock brakes, which aren't the world's best (a Tundra rotor/caliper upgrade is a popular mod, but I haven't springs for that). Anyway, I just installed Akebono ACT pads and they are noticeably better than whatever was in there before. Cheap and quick shipment from Amazon.

    Why we buy Toyotas

+1. A while back I read an interesting article in one of the print 4wd magazines, maybe Jp. It compared their long term experiences with a new JK and an older YJ. The older Jeep obviously has far fewer creature comforts (though those YJ's seemed pretty new-fangled compared to the CJ). Anyway...

    Looking for some Flippac input!

There are various posts, including mine, on torsion bar delete mods. I got mine with a broken bar, and have only tried pivoting a "good" FlipPac with the crank one time. It was easy. However, if you usually camp with one other reasonably strong/coordinated person, flipping it over without the...

    97' T100 Traveler Build

I just installed 4 Bilsteins 4600's on my T100. I replaced some pretty old KYB's from the PO. They don't make much difference on the road, maybe a little less "kick" from the rear axle on speed bumps. But though I haven't done any real-off-roading yet (I just finished up a few hours ago) I did...

The dieimma of purchasing a new Toyota

I just put new brake pads, four Bilsteins and a new steering dampener on my '97 T100 for about the same cost as a set of floor mats and tie downs on a new Tacoma. In the near future, I'll be needing a timing belt and new front axles, and I'd really like to find some new seats. That should cost...

    2009 Honda Fit expotastic build

Ahh, memories! My 1980 Fiesta was quite good off pavement. I remember taking it into the National Forest and filling the back with firewood once. It never occurred to me to get a 4wd till years later. But seriously, some of the newer FWDs are just not as capable as those older cars. Ground...

Best engine and trim level to get for Subaru Outback?

For any Subaru that sees off-pavement use, even before (or instead of) a lift I'd recommend a Primitive Racing skid plate. Cheap insurance. I think the Subarus are the only "CUV" for which you can buy real skidplates, at lest in the US, for both the front engine area and the rear diff. I had...

Going domestic, project vanilla aka the family tankster, 2004 Suburban 2500

Quick question ... with the bikes mounted as you show them, and with the second and third row seats removed, is there room for a couple to sleep next to and ahead of the bikes? Plus maybe have some gear stowed inside as well? I'm looking for the ideal rig for me and wife, two bikes (29-ers not...

    T100 rear sliding window width.

On my '97 XtraCab T100 the usable opening with the window slid open is 18.5". If you remove the two sliding panes, the opening in the fixed portion of the window is 21.5". I'm pretty skinny but I can't imagine squeezing through it. -dman93

    Tire help

Maybe too late, but I recently replaced a D606 on the front of my DR650 with an IRC TR8. It's still definitely in the "DOT knobby" category but is smoother and quieter than the 606. And, MUCH cheaper. That said, I just scored a 19" front wheel with a Shinko 705 tire and I'm loving it on the...

programmable 12V switch panel w/ bluetooth interface

There's a similar - but different - product from Arboreal Systems called the Neutrino. I have one on my DR650 and also in my T100 truck. Max output is only 60A ... the Neutrino is motorcycle oriented, so it also offers variable (PWM - pulse-width modulated) for heated gear or grips, or switched...

    Doc's Daily: a '96 T100.

I've been lusting in my heart for a new truck. The wear and grime of my 18 year old T100, not to mention hankering for access cab or even double cab access to the rear seats, ABS, better ride/handling/mpg etc prompted me to check out the 2016 Tacoma. Nice truck, very nice specs and features. And...

    Flippac Maintenance

My torsion bar went a long time ago, and took the aluminum tube with it, so I can't help you with that. But I've spent a lot of time living my zippers with only slight improvements. I've been using a product specifically marketed for tent zippers, Gear Aid Zip Care. It helped, a bit. But I...

    ECamper from Honda

I've seen several E-campers in the last few weeks. On Sunday, I followed one down the street ... and the top was up. I assume the driver didn't realize, and I tried to catch up and bet his/her attention, but the Element sped onto the freeway and I had to turn off. Will the top survive freeway...

Post your Flip pac Torsion bar failure or success

I'm also on the Central Coast (Santa Cruz) and though I don't know the history of my FlipPac, which I acquired with a broken torsion bar, I suspect it's been local for a long time based on some stickers. OTOH my own truck (which I did not get with the FP) has a surprising amount of rust, so I...

High mount 3rd tail light for FlipPac?

Thanks Camelfilter. Somehow I never thought of putting it inside the window ... makes sense and much easier.

High mount 3rd tail light for FlipPac?

Anyone installed one, and/or any suggestions on a good surface mount light, preferably LED? I think they're a good safety feature. Edit: I mean brake light, of course.
