I agree with the splurging part! Super singles are the single best thing you can do for your truck. That having been said I believe people have put 9.00R 16 military tires on stock rims in aus. successfully. They were 36" tall. The size which was common at the time is no longer available...
These old diesels smoke periodically, I would be hesitant to say anything is wrong. IE if it isn't broken don't fix it. Valve guide seals would be just as likely a candidate. That having been said:
I suspect turbo technology has improved significantly since 1999. I have looked at the...
I am very happy with A/T tires. They are super quiet on the highway, work really well in sand and gravel, and air down to such big balloons that they work pretty well in the mud as well. I carry mud chains just in case.

I drove the truck again today and the power assist felt good. I think it was just the fatigue of 12 hours sawing on the wheel over big obstacles wearing me down. Gotta man up to be a FUSO Driver!!!
I am sitting here nursing a bad case of tennis elbow. We just returned from a pretty awesome two week trip to Southern Utah. At one point we had three days in a row which where twelve hours of driving in low range covering 30 miles or less each day. I was running very low psi for traction...
I am on my second set of all terrains. The first were BFG A/T KO2's which were 3/4 inch out of round and always vibrated horribly. Replaced them after 10k miles with the cheapest tires money could buy which are PRO-COMP A/T. 25K hard hard miles later and they still have 30 percent left.
Ours is a 2000 model FG39-completely stock mechanically 4D34. It will drive all day on the flat at redline at 81 mph GPS verified(and witnessed by traveling companions). Maybe we just got lucky and got one of the good ones! We are light at 10k pounds and have very little frontal area with the...
Peak torque on these engines is about 2000 rpm so that is their happy place. I don't shift down to third until 35 mph and the truck usually holds in the 40 mph range pretty well on most hills(we are 10k lbs.) That having been said I often run at 80 mph(actual not indicated) at redline for...
I use Beads. Happy with the results. Particularly remaining balanced when the tires have a lot of mud on them. Use extra. 1 oz per 10 lbs should do it.

We had a chance to hit the road this weekend. The mirrors were a BIG hit! They stayed in adjustment and wind noise was greatly reduced. An added bonus I hadn't considered is the view out the windows is so much better. Never realized how much the standard mirrors blocked. It is like you have...
The orange car is extremely rare. Not surprised you didn't recognize it. It is a 1973 Datsun 610 2 Door hardtop. Just beginning a hotrod project with it.
