I was really close to buying a 712 (actually Gear's) but in the end, lack of speed, noise, comfort items and parts availability kept me from doing it. A well done 4x4 van will likely work so much better in every way and if you were ever to sell it, would likely be much easier to find a buyer...
I was really bummed I didn't get around much and check out all the Fuso based rigs. I just didn't feel like walking around in the mud, let alone even think of asking anyone for a ride. Oh well, always next year.
Yeah, I had thought of fold up steps (buying or building) but with the spare tire swing out and that I needed two steps, nothing really fit the bill. I got this idea after seeing an adjustable height trailer hitch on the back of a truck and the lightbulb went off!
Thanks for the thumbs up guys. They worked GREAT at Overland Expo this past weekend and I was so glad to have them. Had I used the step stool we had been using, it would likely still be buried in the mud out there. Being nothing touched the ground, I always had sure footing when getting in...

New Steps
So recently I have been working on a new project that I have been thinking about for a long time. I wanted to have a set of steps that were attached to the truck and not rely on a small step stool on the ground. I just never got the details worked out until I saw a similar idea for...
You didn't mention what gears you have in the axles (my guess 4.10) but your given info, of ~2200 RPM at 55 MPH with 33" tires, equates that you were running with the transmission at 1:1 ratio, i.e. 3rd gear. Dropping down to ~1500 RPM calculates out to being in Overdrive (.70:1). That said...
IIRC, the indicator is driven by a small cable hooked to the shift column. There is a small amount of adjustment at where this attaches to. I believe you loosen a screw and move the mounting tab and align with the marks on the dash.
I know this will seem like a weird request but are any of you guys planning on using your rigs on the obstacle/training course? Reason I ask is, I have never been in a Fuso and am curious what it is like, in an offroad type envrionment. I keep thinking this is our next move from our current...
Awesome work Paul. Man, you did in a few months what I failed to do in a couple years!!!! Congrats on getting the new bed on. If this is a dedicated camp rig, I would permenately mount the camper.
That is awesome. You did a lot of things I had wanted to do when I owned mine. The rear wall converted to a single door was a big item I wanted to do. Nice job all around. Here's a pic of my 1010 before I sold it.
The two biggest things you can do to greatly prevent flats (side wall or tread) is to 1. not use P-series tires and 2. air down your tires when you hit the dirt. I have seen folks punch a rock complete through the tread, running at full street pressure.
Looking great!!! Now I need more info about that brake swap!
EDIT: Nevermind, missed the fact you swapped front axles to a 2000+ one. I didn't think there was a swap for the stock '97 and earlier.
Since it is illegal to remove a VIN tag, the body, which is what the VIN tag is attached to, would be an '84. CA does not allow anything older than the model year engine to be installed. If you install a new year, you must have it approved by a CARB referee and it would be titled as the newer...
