    - Yup - 17" through 22" although in the US it has only been 18" through 22" - Comparing the various forms of traction control, whether reverse ABS or lockers is a comparison point. - Air suspension becomes a reliability issue at mileage increases. The linked ExpPortal post of air to coils...

After 40+ pages it's probably time to summarize the points made, primarily along the lines of utility vs the latest upmarket products. The original Defender - Produced between 1983 and 2016, was primarily a utility vehicle for a variety of users, from farmers to work crews. It was simple to...

LOL. Alpine windows are "weird". The rear mounted tire is like a ......... Wrangler. Where did they get that reviewer from? Clearly this guy knows nothing of LR.........

A real world reference point - nephew, an engineer who works in the mining industry and has to travel onsite to different locations. The truck of choice by the company is Dodge with solid axles. They provide the utility and reliability over the varied terrain. The few GM trucks they do have...

A vehicle with solid axles can age gracefully and be upgraded easily. My IH Scout with solid axles had 400K miles on her and never needed axle service other than a u-joint. EAS will wear out and need significant maintenance/overhaul at some point that varies by useage/environment. In addition if...

Blast from the Expedition Portal past - replacing a LR3 EAS because it is "worn out" at 270K km/170K miles. LR3 Air to Coil conversion.....one year later.

As far as IS vs solid axles, there is a reason LR developed and productized cross-linked air suspension to emulate solid axles. IS is poor on uneven terrain as the one tire/suspension system lifts up over bumps but the frame/underside stay level. Works great for a car like ride but clearance...

Agreed. The collector car market is a good example. Once a vehicles reaches a certain age it can be imported/exported/etc and can be driven on any road in the US. There are no safety or emissions requirements. Then there is the kit vehicle market. An entire vehicle can be bought from parts...

IS without cross-linked air suspension is just run of the mill trail limited suspension. It's either both or solid axles.

That would be consistent with the observations I posted earlier of TC on broken down granite/shale. If the TC system can't find traction on at least one wheel it hunts by applying brakes in an attempt at transferring torque to another wheel. That 'hunting' with brakes diminishes momentum/forward...

What is the issue? Width or TC?

Yup, emulation to approximate. When it fails, especially with larger tires which is THE most common initial mod, IS sucks and will likely cause body damage.

IS without cross linked air suspension is not superior.

Except it is more complex, expensive and you do run the risk of field issues. You can plumb around that risk with manual controls, air lines and compressor. Plus you do need to limit tire size for bump stops.

Amusing that we are discussing unsprung weight when the first mod is large heavy load range E tires on the end of the axle, independent or solid. Plus everyone knows LR tries to mimic solid axles with air suspension management

Seems people like to highlight the extreme to make their point vs acknowleging the realities. Road 21 has both easy and hard, on the same stretch. Pick what you want. Interstatephobia was an example. Sure you can drive a civic down most roads, maybe even road 21. Subaru's are very capable on...

Many Colorado trails have an easy path and a hard path. I mentioned Road 21. Sure, you can drive the easy path but what is the fun in that? Think of Interstatephobia. You can drive down I70 all day long or you can take the back roads through rural America and enjoy the drive much more.
