Radial tires for original M416 trailer wheels?

You asked. I'm running an LT235/75/15" C-rated M&S tire on my lil' trailer on 15x7" rims (they also sell the exact tire in a "P" rating, but I wanted something a little more heavy duty). Fully loaded, I believe the trailer weighs in around 1200 lbs. Looking at the tire's sidewalls (I just...

    TJ as road trip/overlander?

Thanks! Surely (don't call me Shirley) there's someone in your area that would let you go for a ride in their TJ to see what it is like. Isn't there a club around you somewhere?

    TJ as road trip/overlander?

I didn't know that Jeep was a 2.5 - all these years for some reason I figured it was a 4.0. Makes me respect your trip even more!

    TJ as road trip/overlander?

Think of your TJ as your friend. Do you want to take your friend with you on your trip? If so, then you'll put up with your friend's little idiosyncrasies. My Jeep and I have bonded over many a trip. We have common shared memories. When it hurts, I hurt. It's a Jeep thing. I've driven my...

trying to work out how to Jeep camp with my 5 year old and 8 month old

I think if you keep your trailer size to that of a WWII trailer size (~40" x 72" tub) you should be able to take it anywhere a TJ or JK could go.

Anyone ditched a Max Coupler in favor of a pintle?

But the pintles with the ball don't allow for as much movement with the lunette ring. You want movement; the "slop" is what allows for the twisting movement. I have separate hitches for the ball mounts and the pintle mounts. No big deal to swap them out.

To pintle or not to pintle?

Yeah; sounds like the Army got it right back in the 40's with the pintle hitch/lunette ring set-up. And here we are 80 years later and folks are trying to reinvent the wheel. I'm glad it worked out well for you.

Need help M416 aftermarket wheel size

Please also remember that trailer axles have a hub that sticks out. So whatever wheel you choose, it needs to have a center hole with a large enough diameter to slide over the hub. Generally steel rims will have a larger center hole than non-steel rims. Measure before you buy.

Thanks! Me too. Next year the BDR folks are coming out with an Oregon BDR. Maybe that'll be my Willys trip (I live in SW WA). Unless I really want to pack light, I need the trailer for an extended trip.

Nice Dinoot trailer! They always seem to come out nicely. "One thing I would also add is to use the same wheel and tires you have on your Jeep so that you eliminate the need for an additional spare." Yes and no. Something to consider.... I just put new 33" tires (LT285/75/16") on my Jeep TJ...

Anyone ditched a Max Coupler in favor of a pintle?

Saying up front: I've never used a max coupler or a Lock N Roll. I've seen the Lock N Roll up close. Lots of folks love them. If I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the Lock N Roll (that's just me). Both seem to be more difficult to connect than a pintle hitch. I use a pintle...

trying to work out how to Jeep camp with my 5 year old and 8 month old

My ideal overlanding trailer is a very small teardrop. I don't mind setting up a small bathroom tent, but my wife might be more inclined to join me if I had a small teardrop. Too bad they're not in the budget anytime soon. The one I spec'd out and want came to around $25,000 (Timberleaf Pika...

trying to work out how to Jeep camp with my 5 year old and 8 month old

Getting a small trailer to pull behind a Jeep doesn't have to be expensive. Example (simplified): Find a used 4x8' HF type trailer (with the title). Some of them were rated at 1700lbs. They come with a 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern on the axle (very common trailer bolt pattern). They came with 12"...

Here's a picture of my buddy by the trailer the first time we took it on a trip. I'd just come back from Iraq, and we ran the Highway 101 loop around the Olympic (WA) Peninsula. Notice the factory 12" rims and tires, wooden stake tub sides, drop hitch, factory axle and stiff slipper springs...

Ok. I get it - you need more room. And you want easy access to your gear; not having to climb up and unstrap stuff from your roof every time you need something. You also don't want a RTT with those little kids. You don't want them falling out, getting them in-and-out of a RTT would be a major...
