A slipped timing belt seems unlikely, though the backfires suggest timing issues. More likely is a damaged fuel pump. It may run for a little while and then permanently fail.

How does the rack attach to the cargo area? I'm not familiar with the Xterra. I have a 95 Pathfinder and was thinking of something similar.

How old are your girls? I have an Outfitter 3. Two big guys with a lot of gear fit pretty easy, but the tent packs down to an easy size and weight.

Yes. That's nice. I have a 95. Gets pretty good mileage. Has enough room for some camping gear. Sometimes I put a canoe on top.
