On my Sport I assume they are rated much higher as both yakima and thule offer 165lb capacity systems that utilize the stock rails. I do think the OEM system with cross bars is rated for less but I'm not positive.

I'm using the smaller one and it's one solid piece. I have it u bolted directly to the raised side rails as a platform rack.

The only public dirt roads around are commonly traversed by stock full size trucks used by the various land management agencies.

Yes....if you want an offroad only rig get a UTV or a 2 door Rubicon. For everything else, a 1st gen cab Tundra will work fine and be useful for other stuff. Reality is there isn't a ton of stuff that requires more than a Subaru in most of the US (especially out east), beyond that a stock 4wd...

    FT-4X

I hate the fuel economy of the taco too....only reason I don't have one. Really I will be stuck with two vehicles unless I can move back to the land of bicycles or I compromise on a wagggggggon

    FT-4X

Here's an actual review: https://practicalmotoring.com.au/car-reviews/2015-mitsubishi-outlander-xls-diesel-review/ A GT (tons of bells and whistles + the V6) run right around 20-25k and they are offering a 3k rebate on leftover 16' models. Can tow 3500lbs, still has a real spare, 8.5" of ground...

    FT-4X

psss look at the Outlander GT. They have a bomber awd system, a v6 with a decent economy/power blend, a six speed auto (no cvt!). Plus they're cheap for the level of equipment (especially the 2012/13's that have a tailgate) and likely will be more reliable than an overpriced used subaru.

    Which Montero?

Take which ever one you can find that is clean, has copious amounts of maintenance records, and as few owners as possible. In the Montero world this is a hard egg to crack and if you find one jump on it.

I am a hunter, yet I do not like to kill animals

That off taste in mulies is typically poor meat handling practices in the field (letting it get too hot, hair on the meat, etc) and not removing the fat from the meat.

Wagons are really really nice. I'm on the taco SR/awd wagon split choice still. And brodozers are worse....

Just wrap it in a spiral. Same technique is molded into the antenna mast.

And the roof rack is mounted. Hard to get much more low profile than this! The bungee wrap will kill any wind noise and works really well as an alternative to a deflector.

    Post up your drawer/storage system

Slightly fancified my simple set up. Many of the drawer systems are overly heavy for my taste so I wanted it to be simple, light, useful, and relatively inexpensive. Ended up under $200 for everything. Tiedowns are made out of Al L-track and I'm using custom ratchet straps with L-track end...

    PirateMcGee's 2001 Montero Sport 3.5XS

Done. Love the L track. I don't think I'm going to run drawers, the plastic totes work juuuuust fine and save a couple hundred dollars and ~50 lbs. Total cost to do this was under $200 including the hardware, 3/4" baltic birch, l track, l track straps, and coating. Weighs about 30-40lbs...
