12V Socket for Fridges: clever ones?

Last week I went ahead and hard wired my Engel 45 I use as a freezer in. After reading this post I figured it was cheaper to buy an extra cord rather than risk having it bounce out and have my steaks and shrimp spoil. Cheaper than some of the cool looking plug ins being sold too.

Solar and truck charging of deep cycle batteries.

Ed, Feel free to email or call if you have any questions about what I've done and learned. The most important thing to start with is figure out your load in amp hours, double it and go from there.

Project Build: RocKrawlers 01 F250 CC SB PSD

Buckstop bumpers are a great deal. Welcome to the forum and I look forward to seeing your build.

    winch question

I have a Warn 16.5 in my front bumper and have only used it for pulling other out of the ditch or snow. I picked it up on a sweet deal through a friend of a friend. It's there for the day I need it though, well greased and ready. I think the question over steel versus synthetic is more for...

Solar and truck charging of deep cycle batteries.

Solar is a great thing when the sun is shining, my concern with remote panels is the potential for theft. Make sure you find a way to secure them thoroughly. Typically the alternator charges camper batteries very slowly , too slowly unless you rig up an alternate method of charging. I am...

    Alaskan Camper Build Up

Dave, We really don't go "off road" per se, we more go on back roads, unimproved roads and fire roads. The weight etc really doesn't make this an off road machine. Plus, I would shudder to think of a rock running down the side of my camper close enough to take out my quick disconnects... I'll...

    Alaskan Camper Build Up

Latest addition to the camper: I got an incredible deal on a Viair on board air system that consists of two 400 series compressors and two 2.5 gallon air tanks. They are plumbed in tandem and produce enough air for all my needs and some of those in the future too. Two compressors and tanks...

Escape Pod Rv: Sprinter Modular RV interior

It has a certain appeal, but it reminds me of a little wooden cave w/o windows. Depending on your vehicle and it's use it could be extremely practical though.

    Sound Deadening Options?

I bought some generic Fat mat off FleaBay when I bought my truck and had the whole thing done when the stereo went in. Sound at driving speeds is much better now.

    Gas powered 12Volt charger

I am running a pair of 85 watt solar panels as well, but they are affected by weather, time of day and time of the year versus your location. Great when at peak efficiency, but that is sporadic. The generator is really not very loud and with the right charger I should have to run it only a...

    Flat bed Camper Setup

I've driven shelf road and enjoyed it, but not a climber unless there is beer at the top. My previous rig was simply a slide in pop up in truck bed so probably would not fit the time frame now now that I look back at it.

    Full-size camping/towing/house chores/daily driver rigs

LOL, I have my share of issues with the 6.0, but I'll drive into the ground before I buy a '07 or newer truck I can't drive south of the border with the low sulfer diesel. I tend to agree, if I had a choice I would have a 7.3 Ford or one of the ultra high mileage older Dodges, less power, but...

    Gas powered 12Volt charger

Hi Ron, Here is an answer to that borrowed from the Outback Power Systems Forum, which is the system I am using: The issue is that the “12 V” batteries at 77 F (25 C) need about 14.4 V (and sufficient current) measured at the battery terminals at the transition between bulk and absorb stages...

    Gas powered 12Volt charger

Thanks for the help Ron and I think I have it figured out now. Charger between the generator and the batteries and hooked through the shunt. To further augment, put a 1000 watt inverter between vehicle batteries and the charger with a shut off relay so that the house batteries charge properly...

    Gas powered 12Volt charger

Ron, I just guess I'm a little ignorant, but if a 1000 watt generator only produces about 3 amps on 110, how does plugging in a charger bring it up to 25 amps? If this is the case, I'll get a charger like you are spec'ing next week. Carl

    Gas powered 12Volt charger

Ron, I never professed in my life to having more than a rudimentary knowledge of electricity. But how does your or my 1000 watt generator produce 25 amps through a charger when it currently produces a maximum of 10 amps on 12 volt? Where does that extra power come from?

    Gas powered 12Volt charger

Hi Ron, I don't see how the Honda 1000 could charge at 25 amps. I have a similar generator and it will produce a maximum of about 3 amps on 110 and 9 amps on 12 volt.
