I have a 17 f150 police responder take home vehicle with the 5.0 I dive 5 days a week for work, it has 3:31 gears, I’m averaging 16 on the highway taking it easy. The truck has no light bar and a factory ford bed cover, in town i average 9 mpg. This isn’t far off from the 7.3.
Why not by a 7.3 gas tremor? You’ll get a bomb proof engine, Dana m276 rear axle, Dana 60 front and both stuffed with 4:30 gears, and the fuel economy of the average v8 gas half ton.
You make a point, I see ford offering the tremor package to compete with other trucks that offer basic off road packages which are selling in masses now. Plus allot of people buy a truck, put a small lift and aftermarket rims and larger tires, ford is trying to sell a turn key package to people...
I agree the 10 speed is sloppy, I have one in my 17 f150 work truck. It’s had a couple software updates and a new selonoid under warrenty when it got stuck in 10th gear. Over all the 10 speed is a great idea it just needs improvement, it’s not near as solid shifting and precise as the ZF 8 speed...
i agree a Toyo ct would be my first choice. On another note, the duratrac has a weak sidewall and gets loud quickly with wear, I wouldn’t choose a duratrac.
You don’t see many in the off-road overland world, they are good trucks but are not the best suited for an off road truck. GM trucks have allot sitting down really low, plus the IFS front suspension is not the best option for a heavy duty truck. And not to mention the new ones are uglier than...
For ram and ford, both have the same issue, non serviceable unit bearings. I heard and could be wrong, in automatic position on the ford bearings it’s vaccum operated, is that correct? I’ve seen a few different options for ford trucks and one eliminated the vaccum actuated part, maby that’s an...
For a big v8 diesel and a truck with horrible arrodymics that’s not bad. But yes, a ram cummins will get better fuel economy, that’s proven , but not by much.
Any old vehicle will nickel and dime you, but they are easier to repair. With that said, traveling in remote areas, I would have a new or newish 3/4 ton gas truck. Gas is readily available and you don’t have to worry about DEF or emissions related issues of a modern diesel.
A 15 with 99,000, was probably someone’s take home car that didn’t patrol allot, or a really small towns police car. I know a local department that has very few police cars and they trade them in every year as they run 24/7. A one year old car from them is destroyed with almost 200k on it.
If you want a police SSV Tahoe or 3/4 suburban, check out Chicago motors, they have a ton of clean used goverment fleet vehicles, sometimes you will see a police raptor. There is a private donor (last name Buffett) that loves to buy large fleets of raptors and Tahoe’s and gives them to police...
