I'm a chevy guy and (given your listed usage) the decision would be easy for me....keep the Ford. You aren't brand loyal (and there's nothing wrong with that); the ford is SAS and Hightop already with a lot less miles, while the 5.4 isn't as strong or tunable as the 6.0, it is a very reliable...
What do you plan to do with your van? Heavy towing or just some commuting/light cargo work?
If you want to tow then the 6.0/4l80e trans package would be the better pick, if not then the 5.3/4L60e would be fine (and less work/$$).
I would only buy a eng/trans package from an 03/04 express/savana...
Unless you have a lot of money/mods already invested in this van it wouldn't be worth doing. There are a lot of nice 2003-2007 express/savanas on the market with v8's that are reasonably priced.
I agree...I speak from experience on this. I think that if you are really looking long term you should focus on 1995-2003 Hightop E350s with the 7.3, extended 15 passenger length if you want the extra room...I love my 3500 express but it is a lot more work to get to solid axle 4x4..
No argument with that...At most I'd do a 2" body lift so that you can put a little nicer wheel/tire combo on there and call it good...save your pennies for a later build.
Probably the most important thing to know about this vintage of gm van is that they are a uni-body design rather than the later models that are body on frame...that may or may not be important to you.
Wilwood makes some mechanical parking brake calipers, I haven't ever checked if they have ones that work with the rotor thickness you'll be running but it's worth a look.
01-06 Suburban 2500 rear axle would have been a better selection if you wanted a 14bolt...disc brake, full float, internal drums for parking brake built in. You would have to move the spring perches though.
I've looked at them a half dozen times and considered purchasing one, but, I just look at the upper unsupported area at the right side of the tire and thing...man that's gotta move/vibrate like crazy on any semi-rough surface. Some type of reinforced stand off latch mount on the door itself...
You do have to modify the shroud, cutting some out(sectioning) of the lower half would be the easiest for just 1". The steering shaft will be close to it's max but it will work. Body bolts are on the edge of being too short/just barely long enough...you'll have to make that decision yourself...
Went inside the frame rails, other than that, pretty much the same level of effort...this Reese hitch is a good place to start for any Express/Savana front receiver set up...
