Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Might as well add our latest video to this thread. This is one is a bit different, about the vehicles we had before the Unimog.

    Diesel water separator and filter

Pollock valves are pretty simple, and I can switch tanks on the move, so if I ever run a tank dry, I can just switch over before the truck comes to a stop and then not have to bleed the system again.

Around Australia in a Land Rover

It has been a while, but we finally decided to make a video of part of our trip.

    Diesel water separator and filter

I also have a Pollok valve - having a pre-filter before the valve is a must, as a bit of dirt will ruin the seals and then they leak.

    Diesel water separator and filter

You guys are pretty lucky up in the North, remote travel for you is about 100-200km from a town? It was one tank of dodgy diesel I got from a pretty remote town in the Outback, nearest other fuel was about 500km away. I guess either the fuel truck has just delivered the fuel, and possibly...

    Diesel water separator and filter

I run the simple CAV filters - very cheap, and you can get them anywhere here in Australia at least. HDF296 filters are 5 micron, and 45l/hour, which I find is enough for my 200hp OM352A. I see people fitting much larger filters where a replacement cost $100 or more here. I pay $10 for the...

    Feasibility of U1200 frame stretch.

    I have a copy of a U1300 workshop manual

    Feasibility of U1200 frame stretch.

Anthing is doable if you have enoug money, you are basically rebuilding most of the truck. The geometry of the frame needs to be sorted out first. You have one of these: My U1250 looks like this A U1300/L37 looks like this (I don't have a better copy unfortunately). You can see the...

    No Starter - No Problem

How to start your truck if the starter motor packs up. 1. Jack up one rear wheel 2. Release handbrake 3. Put it into 8th Gear 4. Wrap a strap around the wheel and pull like mad.

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

and whilst I was in the mood for making some short videos, here is a quick "Chalk Test" I did in the driveway. Seems like the Mercedes Handbook and the Chalk test correspond - 43PSI for the front and 50PSI for the rear seems to be right for my Michelin 365/80R20 XZLs. Now I need to do...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

And Trish also finished making the new spare wheel cover as well. I'll make a plywood insert to fit over the top of the wheel, so than I can stand on it without falling into the hole. https://fb.watch/b-Xy5XlcmB/ Not sure if Facebook videos work here - let me know and I'll find a way to post it.

How to change your tyres - I worked up a bit of a sweat getting them off the old wheels.

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

I just borrowed the bathroom scale, and did a few measurments whilst Trish was at the shops. :) The new wheels with the internal beadlocks are 39.7 + 4.8 = 44.5kg each. I had a pair of 11x 20 SDC "Super" wheels which are 38.2kg each on the rear so they were 5.9kg lighter, and a pair of 11 x...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

New wheels are finally on the truck. Don't think they will be this shiny for long Getting the old tyre off was hard work, fitting them onto the beadlock wheels was a lot easier. I also needed to swap out the wheel studs, as the hubs on the aluminium wheels are very thick compared to the...

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Yes, levers work well, it is all about technique. My wife can change the tyres on our truck, she had a practise go a while ago, just in case. She wants to do a video of her changing the tyre next time we go out bush.

Just weighed the whole wheel, beadlock and tyre assmebly. All up 115.7kg, these things are not light are they.

This is what the internal beadlocks and TPMS sensors look like before the tyre goes on. The plastic insert will hold the tyre firmly against the rim, it squashes into the rubber by about 3mm each side.

Unimogadventures - Our build and travel thread

Fitted the first tyre to the new beadlock wheels. It has the inserts to hold the tyre on the rim and internal sensors for the tyrep pressure monitoring system. I went with an interal one, as the I didn't think and external sensor would survice long on these wheels. This is a bit of an...
