    Shore power 120 & 220

AFAIK: -- US residential power is two 110v phases and a neutral. This gives you 110v at the outlet and 208v, phase to phase, for electric stoves and dryers. -- I am guessing that UK/EU is 220v phase to neutral with a ground. Don't know if there is any way to split a phase in this setup, but my...

    Shore power 120 & 220

Hey Peter! We once went some 18 months without shore power as a proof of concept. Some things we learned: -- You can do it, even with an all electric camper, as long as you have enough battery to carry between rains and enough solar to recharge. --Some (all?) lead acid batteries need a really...

    Shore power 120 & 220

You miss the point. My appliances are 120v as well. Charge yer batteries and use your inverter. Works much better than a transformer. Also limits your draw on often undersized 220v service. My Victron draws less than 4A @220v. Also obviates frequency issues.

    Shore power 120 & 220

Scholars differ. After looking at all of the options (and having spent half of my life living in a 220v world) I simply added another charger. Has worked perfectly and, as I bought the 110v/220v model, it even gives me a backup when in the US. I bought a Victron IP43 Charger, but the exact...

A bit extreme, but we have a dedicated B2B that uses our camper battery to charge our starter batteries. Like many people, our truck sits for months at a time in storage. There are a few tricks needed to make this work, specifically a normally "off" relay and a normally "on" relay, but, other...

Your comments on gearing, transmission, tire size, and engine match my experience. I have a 5-speed 917 with 385/60x22.5 tires. Happiest at about 85-90 kph, but can bog on hills. The gear mismatch means that I would love one gear that wasn't as far down from top gear and one overdrive gear for...

Misc replies: -- Battery bank is a home brew of 840Ah, made up of 280Ah cells. Actually three 12v batteries in parallel, each with 120A Overkill Solar BMS. -- I sourced the alternator through Nations Starter and Alternator (https://www.nationsstarteralternator.com/) in the US and replaced it...

Some random electrical points: -- This spring, with 4x160w panels and 840Ah of battery, we had to charge about once a month, and one of those probably wasn't really necessary. Now, in the fall, our solar charge has dropped to less than one half what we were getting before. While there is always...

Can't answer your question and every truck/engine/transmission/gears can be different. That said, doing roundabouts all day, there are times when an automatic transmission might be nice. Also some argument that an auto transmission can be better in sand, worse in mud. (Depends on your left foot...

Never found one who would insure a non EU/UK registered vehicle without an EU/UK address. May try again through the various camping clubs. First quick survey confirms: UK registration, under 3,5t, less than 2.55m wide.

Again, if you have actually done it, then you will find it easy. But RV forums are full of statements like, "Well, it says descend in the same gear as you used to climb; I went up in "Drive." It is a wonder any any are still alive. So I generally assume (arrogance on my part, I know) that people...

You forgot to mention that air drum brakes are NOT like modern disc brakes. Watch those following distances. And remember, small diesels have NO braking on long grades. All of the roads in France have warning to use engine/exhaust brakes. May have been the rudest shock when I picked up my truck...

But that insurance is not available to non-EU/UK residents. I carry: -- Sand ladders -- Shovel -- Two winches and tree saver -- Two GoTreds -- Prayer rug -- Voodoo doll -- Tire inflator and hose to air system. And I do know how to drive in mud and sand. I just try to avoid them. (Been doing...

In my experience, not a prayer in the US. Edited to add: This is for 8 lug wheels. 10 lug might be possible. I bought Accuride/Kron Prinz rims from: fabian@expeditions-lkw.de Great price and service and the wheels are perfectly round - unlike MRAP and other efforts. Only caveat, he indicates...

The great quote is, "Si hay, pero no tenemos." Literally, "There is (or there are), but WE don't have it." Important distinction, because it addresses the universal question of whether an item is available, at all, but is simply not available in a given shop or town. (Sorry, too many years...

If yer gonna buy one of these beasts, THAT one looks really nice. Ticks a lot of the truck and camper boxes. And, it has UNICAT in the mix. Looks like they built and mounted the box, another plus. But to the OP, note the replacement springs, fore and aft.

We really need Jon(https://vermonsterrv.com/) and (https://vermonsterrv.com/patagonia-here-we-come/) to chime in. Going both ways around the world, including a stop in Europe for an inspection/overhaul? Old MB fire truck, especially the DOKA cab, may not be a bad idea. The slightly shorter...
