I'd like to bump this thread and restart the discussion if there are any takers out there. I have several upcoming trips where I plan to explore this topic on the trail (RTT, off-camber, low-hanging trees) and would love to gather advice.
This week I made the "Big Switch" from offroading configuration to overlanding setup for the fall season. Not an easy week, but I got everything done in time for weekend trips on either end.
Hey Jeff - I think I found the PERFECT tool bag for your swing-down overhead molle panel design. I recently switched to this tool bag, after being impressed by these guys who can sew so well: Video. And here's some more product specs: Tool Bag
You can see that the the bag has a molle straps...
Cool video. I definitely agree with the build vs. buy decision for $75 and a few mouse clicks.
I'm actually planning to build something similar for my stainless steel water cans, but I was thinking I would use a street T junction that also has a pressure relief valve to prevent over-filling by...
Hmmm. I think I just found them when I was rummaging around at Home Depot. I spend hours there looking for various gadgets and parts for projects. Sorry I can't remember the details. But you could certainly fabricate bumpers for the shelf supports from just about anything. The important...
Looks great - I agree with you that it looks identical to the OEM, which really makes it a clever upgrade. Wonder if he's ever considered developing a similar product for the JK or JL? Maybe I should ask.
The Jeep brand is certainly has great sales momentum recently. Hopefully that motivates...
Yes - the OEM window becomes a cosmetic outer skin and the perimeter is replaced with a weatherproof gasket sealing that looks minimal from the outside. I like your suggestion of placing the latch on the inside for both cosmetic AND security reasons. I bet most people wouldn't even realize the...
Jeff:
What do you think about the idea of leaving the window in place, just for cosmetic purposes. Somehow affix it to the hatch platform, so that it is on the underside when open? I agree with you that swing-down rather than gull-wing is more practical for the direction of opening the hatch.
The benefit of cutting into your hardtop with a permanent mount is that it makes removal of the hardtop easier. I just hoist mine off with a couple Harbor Freight block-and-tackle hoists. Not sure if that would factor into your decision, but figured I'd mention it. Good luck with the...
Now THIS is a Scherb Special that I'm really interested in! Unfortunately the Trail Kitchen and swing-down molle panel wouldn't work with the cargo configuration I use for my gear. But I have been trying to figure out how to use that annoying dead space between the roll bars and side windows...
Hey Jeff - not sure if you saw it, but the Trail Kitchen was listed in the headline of a recent SEMA article. Congrats! Here’s the link:
News from SEMA Show Exhibitors
I am all excited to learn more and see some photos and video clips of the system in action, but I couldn't find any on the web page. I figured it was just a glitch with the mobile site, so I tried again on my PC at home. I gave up after a few minutes - am I missing a section of the website...
Hellwig sway bar is installed. I won't have the hard top and roof top tent back on until after August, when better camping weather returns. But I can definitely feel the difference. Much stiffer in the back end. I also had the EVO rear shock mounts installed, which increase clearance by 1.5...
Another impressive project from The Wizard himself! Looks really good. And of course I like the reflection of your Jeep fleet in the windows in the first photo . . .
Found this article, which reviews the Hellwig with a 3.5" lfit and fully-loaded overlanding rig:
