New JKU Cargo System and Other Upgrades

Here's the "morning after" photo. Nothing but ashes. We even tossed a moss-covered stump in there at one point. The perforations around the top rim form ribbons of flame that change colors as the temperature increases. Really cool.

New JKU Cargo System and Other Upgrades

I love it. I own two - one for home and one for camping. I never head into the woods without it. Much better and dragging stones around to make a fire ring and leaving a campsite littered with a pile of charred logs. The vortex circulation is so powerful that it can incinerate even wet or rotten...

    Night-Vision Lights Project

Yes, they cast deep, red light. And plenty of it! But I realized a couple things: 1) They face forward, and I always set up my camping gear behind my Jeep since that's where the cargo bay, fridge and everything else is. 2) They are directional, so they do cast shadows, unlike overhead...

New JKU Cargo System and Other Upgrades

Heading off the grid for the long weekend. Trying a few new things: 1) planning to rig a removable 250-ft zipline in the trees, 2) will test a 10'x10' pop-up canopy since the forecast is for a lot of rain over three days, and 3) testing a new packing system for fridge ingredients. I was able...

New JKU Cargo System and Other Upgrades

Thanks - it's been a lot of work but a lot of fun. 2016 was the last year of the Mojave Sand color before it switched to Gobi. I actually found my Rubicon several states away and had it shipped to me for purchase. By the time I got the idea to create a "Boy Scout Expedition Vehicle", there...

New JKU Cargo System and Other Upgrades

By the way, if anyone is reading this who has experience in designing or manufacturing roof racks and cargo systems (or knows someone who does), please PM me. I'm seeking to hire someone with relevant engineering experience who can help me to develop a cargo system that is designed to work with...

New JKU Cargo System and Other Upgrades

Thanks - it's all about the stars. ;) I wanted to find rims that matched the stars in the large side decal. Rockstar only sells the inserts in a few colors, so I had to have a body shop paint them to match the "Mojave Sand" color of my Jeep. I was worried they would get torn up on trail runs...

Official Test Results: Five Ways to Heat a Tent

Thanks for your input! Yes - I bought some extra reflective tarps that should really boost the effectiveness of the Propex system. I am hoping it traps more of the very hot, dry air that the Propex system circulates inside the tent. Now I just have to wait six months for more cold weather...

2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon with J30 (gobirubicon)

I really like the look of this project and have been thinking about how to improve the lighting in the rear cargo area. But then I saw this online: https://www.quadratec.com/p/ikonic/cargo-light-07-17-jeep-wrangler-jk-factory-hardtop More expensive, but only a 5-minute install and has really...

    Night-Vision Lights Project

Could I use it with my S-POD switches? Do I need a separate dimmer for each light or just one for all four windshield lights? PS - I let my kids pick out the swtiches . . .

My lights have H4 (dual-filament bulbs). How would I use a dimmer to change the color temperature?

    Night-Vision Lights Project

By the way, I also made a simple lens for my backup light from opaque red plastic several months ago. My backup light didn't seem to get as hot as the Warn lights up front. But now I can't find that lens. I'm wondering if it did melt, or whether I decided I usually have the rear cargo door...

    Night-Vision Lights Project

Thanks for all of the additional input! To respond to a few points in the conversation: 1) I got the idea for this project when I would arrive at a dark campsite with a group of Boy Scouts after a long drive. Everyone had to scramble to set up their tents and gear in the dark with flashlights...

    Night-Vision Lights Project

Now that I have finally figured out how to drill and mount the stoplight lenses easily, should I try green lenses? Or amber? Plenty of those colors available as used stoplight lenses.

    Night-Vision Lights Project

Good question! I started this project so long ago that I actually can't remember if I ever tried to find a red floodlight product. I kept assuming each step would be easy: make some Lexan lenses for my Warn lights, or paint them with Dykem, or simply mount stoplight lenses over them. But each...
