You are absolutely correct! I took both of the the 1-gallon tanks to refill today and BOTH still had propane in them. The person at the fill station banged on the tanks with a rubber mallet and said "sometimes the valves get stuck".
I always bring twice as much propane as I need, just in case...
But I should mention there are newer models of the Dometic fridges available with a WiFi app that allows you to monitor and control the fridge from your phone. Jeff Scherb has some good photos in his thread of the newer Dometic fridge model - he is using one in his Trail Kitchen design.
I like it a lot. It was the largest fridge I could fit and still use my upper cargo rack. I made a quick-mount system so I can remove the fridge and slide very quickly:
Fridge Slide Quick Mount
I have massive twin subwoofers built into the floor of my cargo area, so I didn't want to install...
Husky 35 Inch Mobile Job Box
I bought a used snowboard on ebay to mount as a wind fairing in front of the cargo bins. I'll post pictures once I get it installed and painted.
I should also mention that I have tested the tent mounting system on some severe off-road terrain. I used some 2,000-pound cargo straps just to ensure it would stay secure.
Thanks - every piece of this configuration has been a LOT of work and testing!
With regard to the tent mounting system, as far as I know it is the only tent in the world that is mounted flush to a platform rack. I spent a lot of time looking for a solution like this when I decided to purchase...
Here are some photos of the cargo system I designed for my 2018 treks. I am trying some new things this year and wanted to share my ideas since I have learned a lot from this forum!
Well, the rebuilt insulated hoses worked GREAT. The air coming out of the hose into the tent was so hot you couldn't hold your hand close to it for more than a few seconds. And that hot air is beautiful, dry, and odorless. I think it really helps that the Propex heater was cycling warm air...
Finally had a chance to test my rebuilt hoses with the Propex heating system on a cold night. I hung some reflective emergency blankets in the tent and annex to help retain the heat.
I really liked the Low Profile series that Snomaster offers, but I had real trouble trying to find a reliable dealer here in the US. So I ended up with a Dometic CFX-50. I use it underneath a cargo rack, just like Donny does...
I saw this mini wood stove at the HPBA convention this weekend (Hearth, Patio and BBQ Association). Really nice crastmanship and quality. I couldn't fit the chimney in the picture but it extends up eight feet.
And it sure is MUCH cheaper then a Propex system. Will be interesting so see what the power consumption is. We just got a foot of wet snow dumped on us here in Boston, so it will be another week or two before I am able to set up a driveway test of the insulated hose system I built for my...
Thanks for all of the continued input. Some quick responses to a few questions, just to let you know I am still following this thread closely:
Thanks for this idea - definitely a cheaper solution, and maybe even better insulation. But I wanted to make hoses that were extremely durable and...
Thanks - I didn't take any photos before we installed the angry eyes, but I can certainly do that. I think upgraded turn signal lights would help too.
I really like how this grille looks on the Rubicon Hard Rock edition. It seems to match the aggressive bumper styling perfectly.
In the spirit of sharing hard-earned knowledge, which is a big part of what this forum is about:
I am a bit embarrassed to admit that last night I discovered a quick and painless way to insert 10 feet of 60mm ducting into 10 feet of 2.5" thermoplastic tubing. The trick is to slice the ducting...
And here's the photo from earlier in this thread to show the reason I wanted a longer, insulated hose. My plan is to cycle air through both the tent and annex. I learned the hard way that the Propex system works MUCH better when the heater is cycling warmer air from the tent rather than...
Well, the long nightmare is over. I now finally have a long and fully insulated hose that I can use to cycle warm air back through the Propex heater. The photos below show how I did it: 60mm reflective thermal ducting (shipped from the UK) wrapped in reflective pipe insulation inside 3"...
