Just bought me some used FZJ80 front coil springs on Mud. Happy happy, joy joy!
Oh and I liked this article, especially because it came out right after our discussion about portals! :D...
Alrighty then, thanks for your two cents. No plans to drive across Russia anytime soon though.
Oh and good attempt at trying to get rid of me! :p
Buying a sand blaster in a few days. Going 50/50 on it with a buddy. We were looking at renting a blaster and large 185cfm compressor for a week but honestly it makes more sense to buy the blaster and rent the compressor as needed.
Here is the blaster we are buying...
The portals and the potential issues with them is something I am definitely spending a lot of time thinking about. Monster truck? No not at all. Think more along the lines of Oilworkers Rover as that is about the size of truck I am shooting for in terms of height. Portals by design put a lot...
Didn't get much done today other then a pressure wash on the FZJ80 chassis. It cleaned up nicely and is in better shape then I had thought.
Had to do an axle swap on another truck, all part of the plan. As you can see this truck is blocking in the FJ62 so need to get it out of the way! :D
Today = progress made!
I got me a rolling chassis!
Had to bolt knuckles on the axle housing which I simply hate doing as an assembly. Did it anyways cussing the whole time. After that hook up the radius arms and panhard. Slap on tires, lower it down and done deal! No front springs...
Use a more road friendly tire like the BFG A/T and carry a set of chains. In clay, which is what most of CA is nothing is going to work very well besides Boggers.
If you want to see how the Panama guys do it....

Moving forward with the build soon...
Just sold some stuff and more sales in the works. Not looking like there is enough interest in the portals for them to sell. And I am not going to sit on them for a year or two until they did sell. I am very close to using them, in a week or two if they...
Ah ya....that is the 50yr stuff on the right. Hard to find but man is it good!
Yup taking a beater Subaru. Small lift, some meaty 30"ish tires, booty Fab bull bar with some spotties and a custom rattle can paint job! ;)
I had a few sips of it at KOH.....potent stuff! I will turn ya on to Zacapa down south if you never tried it. Best rum in the world! ;)
Oh ya.....looking like beater Subaru for me on this trip.
The portals actually run 9" 3rd member. They are a mongrel of an axle!
However, if the portals don't get used I am definitely going with built 80-series axles.
Cheers
I remember the truck you mention....
Here are some pictures, all of which have been posted before in other threads.
and a few pictures of the motor...
The super clean FJ62 body....
The FZJ80 chassis...
The portal axles I am thinking real long and hard about using...ignore...
Mongrel just seemed to fit since it is being pieced together form a number of trucks not to mention a Nissan engine.
What you mention are some of my concerns with using the portals, along with some possible other issues. Regardless, the axles may very well end up under this truck. The truck...
The Cruiser was for sale two months ago but I wasn't really pushing it or advertising it much.
I would like to use the axles but need to sell something. I would like that to be my FJ60 but if somebody comes along with $13k for the axles I will sell those. If the FJ60 sells first I will...
I have come to a time and point in life where I no longer want in my shed a restored old truck, a modified old truck (meaning a classic that is 25yrs+ old), a new truck or a truck for one specific purpose such as rock crawling. I have had them all from Sunday driver (restored classic) to extreme...
I gave some useful advice in my previous post, it was ignored.
I will give some more advice which I am sure will be ignored again. I also think this thread is chat and belongs in fireside. And the witty flaming and bashing is weak, I much prefer a flipoff smile.
This is more constructive...
