Why not use frozen water bottles for cooler for 2-3 day trips?

The ice suppliers don't do block ice anymore. Doesn't melt fast enough thus less ice sold / lower profits.

    Diesel News: POST HERE

My first car was a 505 sedan TD 5spd manual. They had a huge trailing arm independent rear suspension and basically a 4cylinder tractor engine up front. Fun car built like a tank. Top speed was about 65mph. First gear at idle it would climb over parking lot blocks umm yea great manual to learn...

Having trouble getting proper insurance for my expedition vehicle. Who do you use?

Many multi country trips often end up being self insured at least for portions of the trip due to cost.

Having trouble getting proper insurance for my expedition vehicle. Who do you use?

Vehicles that appreciate or gain value via added gear should be insured based on a set replacement value not a typical auto insurance. We have always used state farm but we also have sizable leverage having multiple properties and multiple family members via the same agent. As a result they will...

which newer full size 1/2 ton is the best overland platform

The idea of a high pressure duel turbo gas engine in a pickup used for big trips to remote places just goes against all my understanding of using turbo or two in a platform that ideally does best when simplified to avoid unexpected failures. Turbo gassers are fun but they come with big costs and...

    XPCamper and GVWR

Considering stock payload ratings for the little trucks were around 1000lbs and it's not till just recently that the "mid sized" trucks are touching 1/2 ton capacity ratings 1400-1500lbs in bed. Granted that's on stock leaf springs not rigs with added leafs and stiffer sway bars. It's...

Cummins 2.8L Diesel "Repower" engine kit

8-10k lol no way. A re power for my 12hp diesel is around 6k installed. For a 180hp 2.8 it's going to be 18-20k.

The Horizon Tour Toyota Tacoma Adventure Build

100 watt panel or say two 80's set up to be set out paired with the group 31 should easily cover what your thinking of using. Assuming your in a ok solar area. Get too far north and the solar gen starts to take a hit. But my 6-8 amp daily need in Northern CA have easily been handled by my two...

The Horizon Tour Toyota Tacoma Adventure Build

I have about 20ft total of strip led lighting, but that is between 4 switchable locations. Two sections in the tent about 6ft each. Then a tongue box lid with strip lighting on the inside of the lid. Which is nice leave the lid open and that lighting lights up the back of the tow rig or front...

The Horizon Tour Toyota Tacoma Adventure Build

Just keep in mind your truck doesn't require much juice to start it. One Group31 deep cycle and a decent sized solar panel on the lid will cover quite a bit regarding power needs. I think if I did lots of trips to out of the way areas the little jump pack battery as a safety backup would be an...

Wood frame campers...?? How do they hold up?

Alaskan Campers pretty much have written the book on wood camper construction. The one my parents had was probably 3-4th owner. Its roof was starting to sag suspected snow overload from prior owner/s. It was a heavy beast but was a great camper. It was sold off when the old Dodge finally was...

fill me in on the realties

The trailer lets you set up base camp then do day trips. An rtt on the car/truck changes the the base camp approach given it gets packed up anytime you use the rig. What are you dragging? How about a lighter smaller less RV tent trailer? We have the original lifetime 4x6 tent trailer. Most CA...

    2007 Jumping Jack Build

Oh I had to replace the steel wheels with Aluminum due to wobbly wheels after about 4yrs of abuse. The Aluminum wheels have stayed true and look nice. Same tire size. We have really enjoyed the trailer. rei 2inch thick self inflate back packer pads under the stock pad made the bunks nearly as...

    2007 Jumping Jack Build

I have the baby Jumping jack the original Lifetime tent trailer 4x6 version of the Jumping Jack made by the same Utah shop. My bunks are queen sized so volume wise my rig is similar to the original Jumping Jack. I use the little Buddy Heater occasionally to warm up the tent. Cold mornings or...

Colorado ZR2 and Tacoma TRD Pro compared

Sequoias are still around several new ones are in my area. The issue is they sit in the Escalade realm today regarding price but lack the Stupid Bling factor. So in the land of $1,250,000 1800sqft 1950's Ranchers the Sequoia is still doing fine. But Mercedes suvs and Escalades seem to be the...

My idea was a bunk cot on the floor. Parents upstairs. But that only works with a 6ft bed

    The Budget Minded Bikepacker

Budget minded? We never used tents just basic tarps. Never bought crazy costly dry freeze meals. Typically we spent 1-2 weeks in the coastal range in Northern CA. We rarely spent more than 4 days in the Sierras different weather and too many people in the Sierras.

Coolant goes to reservoir but not back to radiator

Check the Niple at the radiator neck I've seen them crack and suck air instead of coolant. Also for a few yrs some Subarus had strait cut hoses in the over flow can and they would suck to the bottom of the can and cause this. A 45 angle cut on the bottom of the hose fixed that stupid problem.

I've seen much worse j80's rebuilt. But it was the owner who had lots of experience building 4x4 rigs.
