Project: Blanco, The 2007 F350 Standard Cab Adventure Truck

I did a Painless Wiring H4 Headlight harness upgrade to support some 50/100w Hella H4 bulbs in Hella H4 Glass. I'm kinda burned out (ha) on LED lights. My eyes get pretty sore with white 5000k+ tones. These H4 bulbs are just under 4000k and much easier for long drives on bad weather. The...

Project: Blanco, The 2007 F350 Standard Cab Adventure Truck

I designed and 3d printed this phone mount adapter. It mounts to the factory dash 'plug' ( where the tcase rotary switch could be ) with a big pad of 3M VHB adhesive double sided foam. The phone mount itself is a nice $15 aluminum unit from Amazon.

Light duty winches (ATV) on small to medium sized 4x4s.

Carrying the gear to be able to winch backwards will likely be lighter than a 2nd winch ( and bumper to support it ) You can also use that gear to do a bunch of other rigging to get yourself out of other pickles.

    Soft vs. Hard Shackles

I use soft shackles almost exclusively now. They are much more convenient, lighter, faster, and can be used to do a lot of interesting stuff. The limitation is that they need to be used over a gentle radius to maximize life and strength. They do no like hard sharp metal corners. On most...

    Snatch block for synthetic line

What are you rigging for, Motorhome sized rig? If the SWL you are looking for is 36K and the ring is MBS is over 100K......and you want to use a 3:1 FOS...... It is ballpark in the range you wanted, That was my point. This stuff is generally rated 5-6:1 for SWL because it is coming from...

    Snatch block for synthetic line

It's a 22,000 SWL on the ring I use. MBS on the ring is over 100Klbs. The system is also captured in use. What are you trying to rig for?

    Snatch block for synthetic line

You can try to piece together a system form various places that might work as well for less money......but probably not.... Have fun trying to solve all the little quirks along the way.

    Snatch block for synthetic line

My solution. It is only 1.1lbs vs 7-10lbs for a conventional unit with a steel shackle. I can carry 2-3 of these units to allow much more complex rigging at a fraction of the weight.

Project: Blanco, The 2007 F350 Standard Cab Adventure Truck

After lamenting about what to do with the bed space on this truck for almost a year, I lucked into finding this clean 8' full size Flippac camper on one of the local marketplaces for a great price. It was even white to match the truck! The tent seems to be in great condition. The seals on the...

Which if any overland platform/vehicle sounds like it fits my needs&wants?

This! New vehicles are steadily growing larger and larger..... I found this comparison pretty entertaining when talking about my F350 with a friend.

Which if any overland platform/vehicle sounds like it fits my needs&wants?

I don't disagree. More fuel capacity can be added. In most situations however, I would lean toward having that not be a permanent addition. I don't really need to carry it around every day. It can be very nice to be able to unload the vehicle when stuck also, that is hard to do with a full...

Which if any overland platform/vehicle sounds like it fits my needs&wants?

I honestly just can't bring myself to push it THAT far without needing to stop for something ( I am a fill up at half kinda guy generally). It can easily go 300-400 miles between fill ups on the highway. It is a full size truck, while it will happily go 80mph down the highway with the cruise and...

Which if any overland platform/vehicle sounds like it fits my needs&wants?

I think a lot of us ask ourselves the same general questions over and over. Personally, for 1-2 people I keep coming back to a full-size Regular Cab pickup with an 8' bed, preferably a heavy duty one. My new 'Adventure Truck' is a 2007 Ford F350 Reg Cab Longbed 4x4....V10 gas, 6spd Manual...

Air Cooled V-Twin In A 4x4? Yes, Seriously.

Air Cooled V-Twin In A 4x4? Yes, Seriously.

As another air cooled OEM example.... Tatra used massive air cooled engines in their heavy duty trucks. They are known for being some of the toughest trucks on earth.

Air Cooled V-Twin In A 4x4? Yes, Seriously.

The same way they did it on the LJ10. I think you are going to need a LOT of air cooling. Most air cooled vehicle engines use powerful engine driven fans with shrouds to direct the air to where it is needed most. They also use a lot of oil cooling too.

Air Cooled V-Twin In A 4x4? Yes, Seriously.

The Suzuki LJ10 has a air cooled two cylinder two-stroke stock. As long as you get enough air cooling ( and likely oil cooling also ) it should be fine. Doing that in a tighter water cooled engine compartment might be tough.

Do Full Sized Vehicles Make Good Overland Cars?

Just curious, have you ever put your vehicle on the scale when loaded? I find most people drastically underestimate how much weight they are really adding to vehicles..... If a small vehicle works for you that's great. I have a 1942 Willys MB that I take out on crazy trips. I treat that more...
