I honestly think the Rubicon package with the Diesel is going to be a waste. The 8spd auto doesn't need the 4:1 transfer case in my experience. The diesel package is going to include a Dana 44 front and rear axle also ( minus the rubicon lockers and extra axle width ). I think the diesel package...
Use as few connection points as practical. Adding 5-10lbs of steel with a pintle hitch adapter and pintle doesn't sound like the most streamlined solution possible for a recovery with a receiver. If at all possible, I will hook the strap/rope directly to the pin in the receiver hitch.
The...
Novel idea, but it will only work with a ton of space above the hawse which rules it out for me. It still doesn't solve the issue of having the winch under tension in storage where it can't be used till you power it out. You might get lucky and be able to pop the drum disconnect, but I'm not...
To each their own. This is what I see with the 'safety thimbles' on the market....
If your hawse/flairlead has a large enough throat, you can loop the noose of the soft shackle over a normal thimble and suck the stopper knot up.
Personally, I don't love the idea of sucking the end of the...
The radius on that still looks pretty minimal for soft shackle use. The rough rule of thumb is 2-3x rope diameter for a static bend radius for full strength with 12 strand Dyneema type products.
Why not just use the thimble on the end of the line for the connection to the soft shackle?
Most hooks have decently soft radii for use with a soft shackle also. I've found a few with forging/casting/machine lines that needed touched up with a round stone.
I think a lot of the 'other'...
The ARB jack has some things going for it, even in this basic form.....
-It is more compact. It is smaller to store in the vehicle. A shorter high-lift just doesn't compare. People need room for their fridges, drawers, and espresso makers.
-It is lighter, though not by THAT much.
-It will...
I'm honestly surprised by those numbers, that is lighter than they feel for sure, but I am going to stick with my 5lb Toyota Jack. Best 5lbs of pushing and lifting you can get in my opinion. Heck, having more than one would still be lighter than a single hi-lift and allow you to stabilize and...
I can, and do, blame the design of the Hi-lift jack. It does have shortcomings. If you haven't had to work around those shortcomings, you haven't really had to really work one. Pulling out a fence post just isn't the same thing.
#1 flaw in the Hi-lift design has ALWAYS been that it transfers...
I could probably get out of a pickle with my pocket knife given enough time, but I still don't see the value in carting around a 4 foot long jack that weighs 40lbs.
I bought my latest winch for $400 used (and the previous one for $175) and built my bumpers from scratch so.....
I have come to...
One company out of maybe a hundred? Now you need a $1000 bumper that weighs a hundred pounds to support your $100 jack? Sounds awesome.
Perimeter jacking just isn't my thing, I know that....more power to you and good luck if it is.
Oh gees. Mechanical stuff fails....that is the nature of mechanical things. I must actually use my equipment a little harder than some I guess. I don't have a build in load-o-meter to tell me exactly when the point of failure is for a Hi-lift. They get used....they can fail, it is as simple as...
I used a Hi-lift jack for decades.....or rather.....carted it around and didn't really use it that much because I honestly didn't find it that useful. I used it more as a farm impliment that anything for vehicle recovery. I'll take a winch any day personally.
As far as rocker/bumper designs...
Doesn't the tip/lip on the Hi-lift serve a reasonably critical function though? It can hook the inside of something to help keep it from sliding off the foot....
I'm not sure the ridges on the ARB unit can do the same thing?
I've always thought the best approach for a perimeter jack was for...
Since I don't really like either.....
I think the tip hook of the Hi-lift was contacting the underside of the rocker panel on Harry's jeep.
The ARB unit has no upturned tip at the end of the foot so it was resting flat.
Can you explain what makes the ARB jack more stable feeling than the Hi-Lift?
It looks like there was just a slight difference in the interface of the nose of the jack and the rocker.
I'm still definitely not sold on perimeter jacking as the only solution on the vehicle. To get a tire off the...
No problem welding here.
I'd like to add a connection between parts so they are not just held by gravity. I've used the jack to push sideways and spread loads now more than once.
It looks like the system just slips over the bottle jack top when extended? What keeps it from tipping sideways...
