Is wider really a positive for the overlander trail/bush whacker types? A big bonus for a midsized is the narrower footprint.
Why not go SLT add a Icon kit. Order the skid plate, rock guards etc. Thats what I would probably do. Towing and load capacity is why I would get a new Canyon 2.8. The...
Alaskan builds great campers. Their build hasnt changed since day one. We had one a 8ft non over cab type. On a full size 1T Dodge. Which we could put 22 bails of alfalfa on or nearly a cord of oak. The 1T carried the alaskan ok. But 3/4 plus 4dr and extended trip gear weight? You need 1T truck...
Sadly toyota trucks are way to light for an alaskan. They are heavy when loaded. Even if you tweak the suspension your still dealing with braking limitations and the thirsty 5.7.
For that sort of camper, 2500 at least. Especially if you plan on long trips and lots of use camping. The tundra...
Regarding power splits
Think of it as either dumb 50/50 manual trans that does shift power with wheel spin.
The cvt has been really good. Highly active. It has no fixed split its highly active based on speed. Throttle input, gear ratio etc. When you put the cvt into manual mode 1st or 2nd it...
Been a Subaru fan since dumping my 4runner in 2001 for a 2.5 Legact gt 5spd non turbo. Beat the living crap out of that car, camping, Usal Beach, towing boats etc. Only replaced it for more space it was at 180k ran like a champ.
The OB is strait forward as is my 2010 OB. You have the new...
5200 is used as a marine glue by in the know builders. Never as a sealant. Too hard it doesnt have the flex needed for skin/fixture seals. 4200 is better but not by much.
Stick to the softer more flexable stuff you'll be happier.
Just go Canyon or Colorado 1400lbs. Then toss a Icon kit on. Keep your payload get the rest etc. Two fwc types are running diesel colorados. Looking like 25mpg with the fwc is pretty typical. No fwc 30mpg is fairly typical.
A few current obs have run the pass. Wheezing and gasping all the way. I ran rough numbers a very conservative estimate 68hp maxed out at tye pass. Which matches descriptions of having to keep momentum in the 2.5 climbing the pass.
I've said it for yrs. Only reason id get the 3.6 is for altitude...
Craig My OB is my DD. Two kids under 7. Tow our 4x6 trailer. Same as you its the family schlep tool.
I have a nice Sequoia too. Never drive it.
I like the Canyon diesel. It will beat the 2.5 OB on mileage. My only hang up is the rear seat space. The OB rear seat is massive vs the complete...
Just put new shoes on the OB. Prior set were at the wear bars at 45,000 miles. BFG Advatage T/A the prior generation had a boring highway tread but proved to be really tough great tires. The new BFG Advantage pro T/A has a more luggy aggressive tread. Looks great on the OB.
I cant get too...
I ran 285/r75/16's on mine in 100% stock form zero rubbing. Just a warning at 285 the gearing vs power starts to press the old 4.6L go through your cooling dont be surprised if the radiator is junk and needs replacing. I never had HG issues, but I also understood the I6 wasnt a big v8 and drove...
The wilco tire gate is a hitch setup that allows towing also. I simply rigged up a hand truck with a receiver bar to truck the whole kit to the shed. Only time I had the tire carrier and spare was on road trips. Easy peasy
Rain, its water tight. Though as added security two summers ago up near Tioga Pass Yosemite I had a tarp covering the roof section only. We had really heavy thunder storms every afternoon, with considerable rain fall. Stayed dry. 6 day trip.
Mr buddy heater turns it into a sweat lodge in about...
Going on 4yrs. Its currently parked up the street being loaded up for a dump run. Doing a small shed project for a neighbor ;-)
They changed the design but the classic Jumping Jack is the same tent and little beefier trailer. Love it!
We base camp. Takes me about 20 minutes to set it up, thats...
Hitchgate runs about $800. The nice thing about it. You can stow it in the shed with the spare about 90% of the time. Use a hand truck rigged up to drag it out to the truck hitch. I like mine.
