"Which set up?" is an eternally baffling question for me. My family is small - just three of us. As my wife and I moved into car camping from backpacking 25 years ago we had a Subaru GL 4x4 and Nothface Arrowhead tent (still have it). Then we moved to a 94 Toy 4x4 truck. When our son came along...
Thanks guys. I should be getting my AARP card any day now, so good to go!.
In all honesty, I guess it doesn't look like the retiree vehicle so much anymore. When I first got it, I could stealth camp in a city lot that has a bunch of ski club e350 passenger vans. Not so much now! I get lots...
Well, I'm pretty much done with the build. Just switched to summer tires - 285/75-18s. Just over 34" tall. I *might* add a winch, but this is pretty much the way she'll sit for awhile. I spent about 75 nights and 14000 miles (7000 miles on the MG/UJOR 4x4 swap)with her these past 10 months...
I also responded on the Sportmobile thread, but having daily driven a 5.4 4x4 SMB at 7000-10000 ft for 10k miles, I can say the power is adequate. I have 4.30s and 33s (just switched to 35s today!). It's no rocket, but who really gives a crap. It should run forever and parts are cheap. It can...
I'm curious about the snow/cold weather performance as well. Has anyone *seriously* used one in cold weather? I don't mean 25 degrees with a Propex, but -10f? I'm currently in a Sportsmobile and camp 2-3 nights per week all year long. An Espar in the SMB makes for perfectly comfortable temps...
I have a 5.4 SMB that I converted with an MG/Ujoint coil spring kit, but it is an RB. The power is more than adequate, even at the 7000-10,000 feet that I operate mine at. I originally wanted a 6.0 diesel, but yeah - they cost a lot more up front and then you need to do $5-10k of bulletproofing...
Just wanted to provide a quick update. I've been meaning to give a better summary, but life and work are in the way at the moment. More details when the semester ends!
I've put on about 7000 miles since I finished the swap. All is good! Most of those miles are highway miles in central...
Different beast (2006 5.4 E350 Sportsmobile), but I'm pretty consistently getting between 13-14mpg over the 7000 miles I've driven since I completed my swap in November. I haven't weighed, but I'm guessing I'm at about 8300 pounds now. I'm pretty happy with that considering winter driving on...
I'm curious about what you come up with. I'm in the same boat. I like how quiet and solid the E350 is, but it is a drag to drive compared to the Syncro. Also I've noticed that my Syncro attracts cute hippie girls and my van attracts homely dudes.
I just had the same scare with that tranny plug...
To Josh's point about gear ratios. I did find 4.30s. My first set of tires are winter tires (275/70/18 - tallest snows I could find in 18s) and they are 33's. For a car that does a lot of highway miles, I think that ratio is a bit low (high). I would go with 4.10s if I were going to stick with 33s.
That is a wicked-looking stabilizer and diff cover! Although I didn't really think I needed it, I did add a Rough Country dual stabilizer. I can't say I've noticed much of a difference. Still feels good!
Also, I tried a different set of front springs. I originally went with the Moog CC880s that...
Raul - pulling and converting the 4r75 wasn't really a big deal - one weekend - but if you can find a low-mile 4x4 version that would be ideal. Mine only had 42k miles on it and it shifted perfectly, so I wanted to stick with one I knew was good. Total rebuild parts on mine was about $800. I'm...
