I checked part #s. There are two different axles depending on tire size and ABS, however if both vehicles came with 265/70s and ABS it appears to use the same.

Pretty sure they are all the same. May be hard to get just a used axle. Most salvage I would think would want to sell the complete rear end

Pass. If it was a 22RE then jump on it. Not the 3.0 though. I mean, it aint terrible, but the 22RE is much better.

Id choose a 1st or 3rd gen over a 2nd gen. A 5th over a 4th if I had the coin. 4th gen is likely to be the most reasonably priced. Fine trucks, they just don't seem to have the following as a 3rd or 5th.
