As many as you need to stay in the torque for any given engine. I've driven a few newer autos with 6+ gears and it makes a difference. It's faster or more efficient as needed.

Thanks. I'm not worried about it. I could have built in more water capacity and battery space but I doubt I will ever need it. If some day I feel like I need more of either, the whole thing could become a water tank pretty easy and I can move the batteries.
