    A440 replacement...which way to go?

We rebuilt the A440 in our FJ62 almost a year ago and are very pleased with the results. TLC did all the work including rebuilt trans, torque converter, transfer case, and driveshafts. Considered the other two options, but wanted to keep the truck original (ruling out the H55 conversion) and...

    Our New FJ62

welltech, yes I've done the valves, with the exception of the last time. It's a messy job, and best done with the engine hot, but relatively straightforward. Because I had to get the truck smogged in Dec, I took it to a Grass Valley shop recommended to me, and they did the last complete...

    Our New FJ62

You are all too kind. Lucy loves the attention. Here's an example of how our FJ62 spends much of her time in our area of California. Recently we drove a 50 mile off pavement loop from Colfax to Iowa Hill along the north fork of the American River. This is a route on old mining wagon roads...

    Our New FJ62

Thanks again for all the kind words. welltech, you are in good hands at TLC. Thought a quick update of the last year and a half with Lucy might be of interest. In that time we have put 15,000 miles on her, exploring all sorts of backroads in our area. The Sierra foothills are laced with old...

Is a FJ62 a bad idea as a “expedition” rig?

You can always go used and save tons of money over new or rebuilt. CruiserParts has used A440s for $750 with warranty. But they also have a new H55F for $2595 and a rebuilt t-case for $1250. All depends on which direction you want to go with your Cruiser.

Is a FJ62 a bad idea as a “expedition” rig?

The final cost will depend on the condition of your A440. If your tranny is in good, rebuildable condition and you have someone else do all the work, I would budget at least $4500 for the rebuild, including the torque converter and the transfer case (might as well do it while everything is...

Is a FJ62 a bad idea as a “expedition” rig?

Agree with esh; manually shift into 3rd to gain speed. The A440 likes to upshift quickly, so holding it in gear for hills, long grades, and acceleration helps a lot. I regularly use 3rd gear running up Donner Pass, and the truck easily maintains 60 mph (running 33s and stock gears). I...

Is a FJ62 a bad idea as a “expedition” rig?

My wife absolutely loves our 62, and she was set on getting one from the beginning. We have had ours for a little more than a year, and have driven it all over northern California as well as trips to Oregon. Easily carries all of our stuff with plenty of room left over (there is even enough...

Laptop GPS - more reliable and stable?

We run Delorme Topo USA on a MacBook Pro using Bootcamp and have been very satisfied with it. For a GPS receiver, we use our PN-20 tethered to the laptop via the USB connector that comes with the unit. Very straightforward to set up and use, but be forewarned that Delorme Topo software has a...

    Operation: Hood Stick Removal

For a Land Cruiser it is. The reason the holes for the rod and grommet are there is because the front structural bracing that supports the radiator in the 1991 80 is the same as the 60 series. The 60 series used spring-loaded lever supports to aid in lifting the hood and the metal rod to...

    Operation: Hood Stick Removal

Actually, it is a retro mod, going back to earlier and simpler times, before the newfangled gas struts were in vogue. I like it. Sure the stick works, but I would lose the damn thing or bury it under gear in the back. Hate when that happens.

just bought a delorme gps pn-20...

The PN series units work best with the Delorme Topo software, so buy Topo 8. You then use Topo 8 to select map sections to download to the PN-20. There is a bit of a learning curve with Topo 8, but selecting map sections and downloading to unit is reasonably straightforward. You can also use...

    Verizon MyFi??

We both have the Verizon wifi. My wife uses the mifi hotspot with 5 users for her work. She is a heavy user and must monitor the 5GB limit, but she rarely hits it. If you exceed the limit, the cost adds up quickly. I have the single user wifi and never hit the limit, but I am a relatively...

    Hello Miss FJ62. Flaco's dream.

We recently rebuilt the A440 in our FJ62 and it really transformed the truck. Didn't make it a speed demon, but it can now keep up with traffic and maintain acceptable speeds on the grades in the Sierras near our home. Our truck is running 33s with a 2.5 OME lift and stock gears. A trans...

    New 1988 FJ-62 Owner

    GPS- What are you using?

nuvi255 for street navigation Offroad, PN-20 tethered to 13.3 Macbook Pro laptop running Delorme Topo8 in Windows XP using Bootcamp. Great setup, but gotta spend the time learning Topo8 to make good use of all its features. Thinking maybe upgrade to PN-40. Still trying to sort out best...

    60 series or 80 series

When we bought our FJ62, it was strictly for the classic look and experience. Ours has the 2.5" OME and 33s, so the ride and handling is acceptable. When we want to cover ground fast and in comfort we take the 911. But AndrewP is correct that owning and driving a 60 is a committment, but they...

    Our New FJ62

Thanks to all for enjoying our FJ62 story. What a great bunch of folks on this forum. Hope to post our adventures, and continue to learn a lot from the people here. Who could not love refrigerator white? A friend of ours said Lucy looks just like the Land Cruiser she drove all over Sudan...
