09 Tacoma Budget Build Options (For Mild Expo trips)

Any suggestions on a light weight rear bumper, with a receiver for a hitch? Or is a rear bumper a waste of money when I can just buy a hitch and add it. I ask because my rear bumper is a little bent, and one tow point would be nice. You never know when it could be needed.

Just get a hitch and that will give you a decent tow point from the rear. If you don't mind the bent bumper, going with either a factory tow hitch or aftermarket one would be the most inexpensive way to go for the rear tow point. All-Pro makes a lighter weight front plate bumper with 2 tow points and IIRC they are pretty inexpensive. Good luck with the build! :safari-rig:

My answer to the OP:

All you REALLY need is an OME lift (heavy Dakars and 886's), BFG AT's and a set of sliders. Save the rest for trips ;)

Any suggestions for lighting. Id like to put PIAA 510 fog light version in the factory fog light holes, and mount some onto the factory bumper. Any suggestions for the bumper mounted lights? Id like to make a longterm solution for wiring them also. I see people add the blue sea fuse (I thinks thats what its called). Is that the long term solution if Im adding more electrical components?

Question about aftermarket wheels. Ive been thinking about a set of ProComp 7089, or another similar black rim maybe an American Racing rim with a Teflon coating. I see alot of the built expo tacomas keep the stock 17 inch trd alloy. Right now I have just a set of 16 steelies, I want to get somthing different, to give it a cool look. In terms of weight are the 17" TRD alloys lighter than an aftermarket 16"? Then added weight of the tire, depending on the tire, which is lighter?

I'm not sure about the weight difference between 16's & 17's. But there is a noticeable price difference in tires. I personally am a fan of 16" wheels instead of 17's because you could fit a taller tire in terms of sidewall with the 16's vs
17's.

Little up date. Im ordering a set of black procomp 7089s. Sticking with my stock tires, till winter because they are brand new. Now ive just been look into sliders a little and some lights. I know I will be mounting the PIAA 510s in the factory fog light holes, and im unsure of what id like to mount on the bumper in front of the grill.

You wouldn't be able to mount lights to the front bumper. There isn't any support for them. Guys on TW have made a bracket and replaced their grill with a Grillecraft, then mounted lights behind the grille. The other option is getting a light bar, ie. Avid or N-fab/Smittybuilt.

Thread revive. Picked up a lightly used set of TRD Offroad alloys for a good price. Waiting to rattlecan them a graphite color. Tires will come before winter is here.

Would 5100s in the front with stock coils stiffen the ride a bit, also could they work with a set of ome dakars. I dont want to max out the adj on the 5100s and need control arms, or make it to stiff of a ride. Would the dakars give to much rake? Thanks

Havent installed my 5100s yet. My build has been on hold for quite a while. I have a question. If I crank my 5100s to 1.75" I was planning on getting a wheelers 1.5" add a leaf. If I decided to keep the truck stock height I was considering air bags. Ill be towing a pop up with the usual camping supplys, and wood. All I want is to stiffen the rear up, keep the ride close to stock unloaded. Are air bags better than an add a leaf?

Air bags give you the ability to level the truck out better. If truck loads up more just add more air in the bag. I've 5100 set at 0.75" air bag can level out the truck with no problem. Even at 1.75" it should work. I've both add a leaf and air bag in the back cause the weight of camper.
