1.4 Transfer Case into D1

Is a 1.4 TC from a Defender a straight swap into a D1? Also, where is the best place to look for one of these in the U.S.?

It is a straight swap but only NAS 110s came with them here. Going to have to go overseas to get one.

I know you were interested in doing this swap. Did you ever get around to it? What about details like the diff lock linkage, VSS function, wiring, etc.?

Haven't gotten the transfer case yet but I do plan on doing it very soon. Everything is the same from what I understand on the LT-230s so it is just a very simple swap. I have known a few guys that have put a 1.6 ratio tcase in there discos.

As posted on dweb...

The 1.4 gears will go straight into a tcase from a D1, but not a D2. The input gear is different on the D2. Your going to find the 1.4 gear to tall unless your running a big tire like 35. And I'll assume your keeping the diffs stock...

I have a 1.6 high gear in my d2, with 4.11 in the diffs and plan re-gearing down to a 1.4...with 37's

Good post. I cant imagine why you would want to gear down to 1.4 in a stock vehicle when gearing down in the axles is more ubiquitous and thus, easier. If youre going to keep the gas motor, re gear the diffs.

Whatre you spinning at 65 mph again?

It's not stock. I'm running 31's, and looking at 32's or 33's in the future. I'm considering doing this and keeping the 3.54's instead of changing the r&p's to 4.11's. I can buy a Defender LT230 from the UK for about 150.00 USD. Even if I have to pay twice this for shipping, I'm still looking at at least half the price of regearing the diffs. Looking at the gear calculator, http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html, It seems like the 1.4 would be close to the same as installing 4.11's, maybe slightly lower. Even with 32's, I know this will put me at overall lower gearing than stock, with high gear at 65 turning 2500 RPM. But isn't that also the same as stock Defender 110 gearing? Right now stock I'm turning about 2300 at 65. However, accelerating on the flats and on steep grades in the mountains, I feel too tall now. My RRC with stock everything and a 3.9 feels much better compared to the Disco with 31's. My Disco used to be that way before I put the bigger tires on. At least at 2500 RPM I can come down a bit on grades and be just about right, with some gearing to spare. Set up better for a diesel if I decide to go that route in the future as well.

If your looking for flat out acceleration with a fully loaded truck, your better off dropping a 4.6 motor in...re-gearing will help, but it won't give you the results I think your looking for

4.6 is definitely on my mind. But if fuel prices soar again as the economy recovers and China starts demanding more oil, then I will be thinking diesel again, or maybe an LPG conversion.

Have you really found good LT230's for $150 in the UK?

If you can get some, Timmy and I will each get one.

i'm withcha on that...
Listing on Ebay UK for that or less. Only assuming they're good. I know some people there that can check them out for me though. If a few of us want them, maybe we can have them combined on a pallet for shipping?
