100 Series tranny, 4 speed vs 5 speed?

My 2000 LC was recently totaled. I am on the hunt for a replacement. I have been looking at the 2001-2002 models because they had a few extra options my 2000 did not come with. I have not decided if I am going to buy my old truck back from ins, but if I do that means I will have a trail rig or complete parts truck if I were to buy the wife another 2001-2002 model.

I have kinda looked at the +2003 models. I know they have several bigger and better features including a 5 speed transmission. They are all a few $$$ more than the ones I am currently looking at. I have looked at the 100 Series Newbie guide on Slee's website. Are the mechanical updates on the +2003 worth the extra cash? I can buy anther replacement 2001-2002 with what the Ins is paying out on my truck. Should I really consider saving more for the slightly newer models?

Thank for the input!

I owned a 2000 LX-470 and got rid of it in part due to the (IMO) lack of power on the highway. My brother later bought a 2007 and the 20(?) + HP along with the 5-speed was huge. I am presently looking for a lower mileage 2007 LX or LC.

4 speeds are for people that have never owned a 5speed...

Bingo :D

I have a 4spd, I don't mind it until I drive a 5, 6 or 8spd LC. Then I remember how clunky it feels.

My standard LC advise particularly for the 100/200, buy the lowest miles, newest one you can afford, nothing on an older model is worth buying into more miles or age imo.

Stupid question? is a 5 speed tranny compatible with a 2UZFE (1999 100 series)?

The A343F was coupled to the 2UZ from 1/1998-08/2002 (I think it's late)
The A750F (5speed) was used from 08/2002 til end of production

Physically it's possible to mate the two BUT wiring and ECU may be the challenge.

Are you sure?

I thought the 5 speed came in 2004-2005 timeframe. 2008=200 series

I have a 99 with the 4 speed. Towing our 3,000 camper makes me want to try a 5 speed. I think the tighter ratios would give a better experience, not that I really have any complaints though. Without Kurt knowing, I took his advice and bought the best one I could afford. An older 100 fits my budget pretty well and so far its been a great choice for the diverse needs/wants my family has for a vehicle.

I owned both vvti 5 speed and the earlier non vvti 4 speed. The 4 speed actually got better gas mileage than the 5 speed. Also the non vvti motor had better lower end grunt. The vvti rev'ed constantly and continually shifted between gears.

My vote is for the pre 2000 for the famous fzj80 4 speed stout tranny. Only problem is the front pinion, just replace it with an ARB and call it a day with the factory rear locker.
